Default Wrist Pin Noise Questions

My 2002 A4 Z28 with stock internals has a rattle like a marble in a paint can that seems to be coming from the #2 or #4 cylinder. I have Piston slap that seems to go away when warm and this new marble noise started about 500 miles ago. Car only has 18,600 miles on it.

Is Wrist Pin Noise RPM specific? I can only get this noise when in parking lot situations from 1000-1400 RPM. It sounds like a clacking noise.

I know this isnt normal but is it worth tearing the engine apart if indeed it is wrist pin noise?

Does anyone know what other problem these symptoms desribe?
I plan on adding a cam and heads to this car and was wanting to get some decent mileage out of the stock block? What would you do?

take it apart.........if it really is mechanical noise from a part (like a wrist pin) then the only answer is a rebuild......

when you say "parking lot situations from 1000-1400 RPM", do you mean sitting still and rev the engine or do you mean when you push the gas a low RPM to start moving/moving really slow and accelerating?

you COULD be lugging and getting ping......

Its the loudest when I am driving it in parking lot/slow (10-15 mph) but I can pop the hood and listen and still here it when the car is in park.

Any chance you cracked a header or you're hearing a small exhaust leak?

No. Definitely not an exhaust leak. I wish it was.

If the exhaust is good then it sounds like, from your description, rod knock.

....does it do a "tump" "tump" "tump" sound.....kind of slow at idle?

I'll listen better later but its fairly quiet at idle. Is Rod knock from a spun bearing? Wouldnt I hear this all the time rather than in the 400 or so RPMS I do? Car idles fine and I feel no loss of power. I'm just really confused as to what it may be.

Sometimes when it first manifests the noie is more prominent at certain rpms. Then it becomes more noticeable as the situation gets worse.

sounds like collapsed lifters. Same thing my car did. Dealer kept saying it was piston slap 'til I had a coolan leak and they had to remove the heads. Noise is gone.....Well, was gone. Seems to be coming back on the driver's side now.

This is what it sounds like to me. I've had it happen. Had a slight knock only at a specific rpm band. Ran like that for a long time...then blow-by got bad, blew all my oil out the dipstick, yada yada yada, rod went through the side of the block. Moral of story: never race a sick motor!

Regardless what IS wrong, it is going to require disassembly, so I would do it now before it becomes a bigger issue.
