Default are 98 f-body cams the bad ones???

I was reading somewhere that certain year ls1s had better cams than others. Ive got a 98 right now and since its apart I was wondering if it would be worth it to swap in a used corvette cam...(newer the better??) since they seem to be pretty cheap?

What would I gain as far as hp, tq ...revs???

Would I "need" to change anything else as far as lifters or springs?
I will be having the computer retuned either way after it goes back together.

thanks!

98-00 ls1s have the same cam (both F-bodies and Corvettes) while '01-'02 have a different cam.

The only Corvette that has a different cam is the Z06, which has an LS6 cam. The LS6 cam would be worth swapping out your LS1 cam for if saving money on a cam swap is your biggest concern.

the oem ls1 cam differentials are inconsequential. if your gonna swap in a cam the bare minimum i would do is 220 duration.

ok so even the newer standard c5 cams wouldnt be worth my time to swap them in...only the ls6 ones (which im sure arent dirt cheap).
I dont really want to spend too much money on this motor right now since I dont really know its history/condition.

ls6 and hot cams dirt cheap relative to aftermarkect cams. im sure an ls6/hc and springs could be had for 300 or less.

there is a 01 z06 cam in the for sale section with springs/retainers for $150. How much would I gain with that?

You can get an '02-'04 LS6 cam for about the same (maybe a little more)... the '01 LS6 cam is not nearly as good as the '02-'04 versions.

i'd say ~20rwhp @ peak. the 01 is the smaller cam out of the ls6 motor, the 02's got a larger one.

01 204/211 .525/.525 116lsa
02 204/218 .551/.547 117.5lsa

thats off the top of my head.

20hp with the 01...how much would you say with the 02-04s?

get a hot cam, and some 918 springs. you can prolly get it for ~300 like jrp said. you won't be disappointed, but the LS6 cam isn't worth the gain imo.

With LS1 Hot cam, according to previous owner, it dynoed at 358hp & 359 lbs of torque. It had long tube headers, cold air intake and Flowmaster Y-pipe with straight through turbo muffler. I think that's pretty good...

That is not correct. In 2000 the C5 had a higher lift cam with a 115.5 LSA. It was the equivalent of the better 98-00 F-body cam, but with a better LSA. And actually the cams above and below 2000 were close, but not the same on the C5s.

That's correct, but they are all VERY close if not the same. Point being, not worth the change...

FYI - There were some 98 F-bodies installed with the Corvette cam during mid-production run.

I feel sorry for those guys. That cam was crappy. Those were probably reverse-factory freaks, slower than most F-body cars.

I agree, just go ahead and take the extra $200 and buy the cam that best fits your requirements.
