224/224/112 cam and stock tune?
i would like to upgrade my cam and was wondering is the one in the title is too big for a stock tune. I will eventually get one but, would like to not have to spend the money right away.
1. is this too big?
2. how will mpg be affected?
thanks
ps my car is an m6

I honestly wouldn't get a cam, even a 224, until you can afford the tune. I know you want more specifics on it, but it just won't run properly. Worse gas mileage, low on power, poor idle quality (though not too bad with that small of a cam), etc.

My experience is that the idle situation, without a tune, and that cam, is near impossible to live with. Fueling didn't change much after installing the cam, but idle was horrendous. A tune is definitely needed.

I just want to add that after you do get the idle sorted-out, it is an amazing street cam. Docile around town under 4k, over 4k like a wild animal. You can't go wrong.
Good luck!

my friend has a bigger cam than that on a stock tune. when he first starts it, it has to learn the idle for a few seconds, but thats about it. we stay dead even in a race though, even though his cam is bigger than mine, b/c i have a small tune.

I ran my car for a few weeks untuned after my cam install (tr224 112). The only real issue I had was hot starts. Other than that, the car drove pretty well. Still, you definately will want a tune.

dont cheap out now.
get the manley double springs and tit retainers as well as hardened pushrods. Seats/seals/shims needed.
At this point if you cheap out.. you will REGRET IT in the NEAR future.
It seems you are NOT ready yet for a cam. You can of course buy a cam and say.. here I am.. cam only. but this isnt the way to do things.
Its ghetto rigging it. I too wanted to spend the least amount of money on a cam setup. I just wanted a cam and didnt want to hear anything else.
I did ALOT of research and found that you might as well get the purhsrods that are hardened because when they start pulling them out.. you will PROBABLY find some that are bent already. Now if you have them next to you.. perfect time to replace em right? Also.. you dont want the springs not being able to handle everything. Might as well get the springs now.
Tit retainers are AWESOME and should not be overlooked.
A CAM setup and Tune will run you in the neighborhood of 1300 bucks total WITHOUT install unless you can work in a install price and tune is free?
I know one place like that. They will install cam kit for like 750 but wont charge you for a tune which normally runs you 550-600 bucks for the tune. I cant say where this is since I dont know if it was pertaining to me and ONLY me?
But dont cheap out now bro!

99FormulaM6, your car looks almost exactly like mine except I have Firehawk instead of WS6 wheels. I got the same red STB, firebird plate decal, regular T/A hood. You have superb taste my friend.

I'm sure I have all the tools and I have a lift so the install will technically be free. What would be needed other than the thunder dual spring kit? I think I would just buy their valve spring compressor in addition to the kit with the gaskets. Anything else I would need?

I have a 224/227 114 cam in right now. Without a tune cold starts were a real pain in the ***. I was stalling all over the place. The car did learn to adjust to the cam and the cold start problem went away after about two days of driving. BUT a SES came on. I aasume this happened because the computer had to go outside accepted parameters to make the cam idle well.
Anyways, I went to Rapid Motorsports to have the cam tuned. With the computer learning the cam on its own the car was at 315 hp. After the tune I was at 333 hp. All the idle problems were gone, SES was gone, Skip shift, timing added in...etc.
I would recommend a tune as well, Although, to be honest, if the car had not started throwing codes, I probably would have left it alone for awhile.
I wont get into an argument about dual springs vs single except to say that I have no worries at all about my my Comp 918's being in the car. I don't really drag race the car and my thing is mostly hitting the twisties. That doesn't really require me to near redline very much, so the valvetrain isn't really ever going to be abused. Besides, I would be worried about dual springs and the stock lifters.
Thunder Racing has a decent cam kit that includes pushrods, springs, retainers, all of your replacement gaskets and a new crank bolt. That's where I got mine.

i was thinking the doubles might be overkill but, the dual kit comes with dual springs, and new stems seals and seats for only $70 more. Anyone else think dual springs are too much and will cause problems? Also does the thunder gasket kit for the extra 55 come with the longer bolt?

I like having duals. Even comp 918's can break and an aftermarket cam, even a 224, can be very hard on springs. Once in a (great) awhile, they do break. If that ever happens to me the security blanket of a second, inner spring is something I definately want to have.
