What's wild for a cam in a 408??

i am still trying to find a cam for my 408 thats being built and i would like to go a little short of a crazy cam. I was thinking around a 252/257 635/632 113lsa. This will not be sprayed! Only N/A Also, AFR 225's :judge:

That's about right for "a little short of a crazy cam"

destroyerSS Jul 19, 2005 09:35 PM

How drivable would this cam be?

1QuickT-A Jul 19, 2005 09:42 PM

thats really not that big for a 408ci motor.. it might be large for a daily driver, but not a built 408..

hydraulic or solid roller? you can get away with a bunch more cam than that with a 408 and with good tuning still keep decent street manners

I don't know about a bunch more. That is a pretty stout cam, even for a 408. I'd say it's the equivalent of my cam for a 346 as far as streetability.

Bigger the Cam the higher the compression needs to be to get the full affect of the Cam :)

I figure the Cam you have listed would do good with 12-1 compression.

Try it and let us know! Tuned it should be "ok" as far as drivability, I wouldn't have it as a DD though. Just my preference.

This is a top 1% of the biggest cams for a 346 and is bigger then most 408 cams.
The cam he is looking at isn't small by any means.
I would say it would be similar to a G5X2/G5X3 in a 346.
On the big side for not going "Crazy", on the avarage side of "Crazy".

I tried a 262/270 .646 cam in my 12.5:1 motor. It wanted about 14:1 compression to run. Way too much overlap. Let me tell you from experience, DON'T GO TOO BIG!

JakeFusion Jul 20, 2005 04:33 PM

I say, go apeshit and get Futral's Godzilla Cam: 275/286 .793"/.793" 108 LSA Solid Roller.

:werd: ;)

I've got a 26x 26x cam on a 113 lsa in my 408 and it's not THAT bad. It won't drive under 2200 rpm, but it's ok. You can get in 6th on the highway at 70-75. I have 3.73's and with 4.10's it shouldn't be that bad.

1QuickT-A Jul 20, 2005 06:42 PM

Well, if you think thats a big cam for a 408 then how bout this..

I have a friend with a 408 Stroker motor with a camshaft that is 27X/28X duration & 823/826 lift! Has about 11.5:1 Compression and the cam is ground for Nitrous.. Oh yeah, Its a FORD motor tho!! lol Also another good friend has a 351 Cleveland bored over with stock stroke with Yates heads and a Comp .810 lift cam. THOSE ARE BIG..

Daily drive my 252/256 612/612 112lsa everday in stop and go traffic 20 miles each way. Drives pretty good if you ask me. But then again, I had Jason at TSP tune it. ;)

My compression will be 11.25-1,
So should i go a little smaller on the duration Say 250/255? and should i stay at a 113 LSA

The cam I had in my 418 couldn't even be made by Comp or Cam Motion I had to have it made by LSM in Waterford, MI . .900" lift wasn't doable they said. Ha I showed them.

:eek2: What kind of spring pressures do you have to run with that much lift?

777 Jul 21, 2005 08:02 AM

He just took the springs off his rear shocks :jest:

Jason 98 TA Jul 21, 2005 09:27 AM

I ran a 256/266 or something like that in my 408 stroker. It's currently in a daily driver making about 540rwhp & running prc springs :) :) Hopefully Ryan will post his expriences with it :)
