Worst oil consumption you've ever seen....
So my 422 burns unbelievable amounts of oil. It smokes bad when cranked and will burn about a qt every 50 miles. The spark plugs are coated in oil. I'm going to pull the motor and just rebuild it. What all should I look for/replace when in there? I was thinking rings, valve seals, and bearings? What things would cause oil consumption that I should be aware of? I want to make sure I get everything right so I don't have to redo this. I am also going to replace the oil pump. Anything that I might as well do while I have the engine out?

Thats the worst. Geez. Bad valve seals will let oil drip down in the cylinder on the piston and it will smoke like a sob when you crank it up. Valve seals if really bad will leak like crazy when running enough to smoke.
I would do a leakdown test and compression test before I yanked the motor.
Is your pcv plugged up? Ckeck that too.

Id take a look at the valve seals first to see how theyre doing. Look inside the intake to see if it has an oily buildup. You may not have to pull the whole motor....well I hope you dont. I hope its something as small as the valve seals.

Ok, well I have found at least one problem. I believe the PCV system is all jacked up (from what I was able to gather from http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18) I have an LS6 valley cover. I just went out and took these pics. Pardon the leaves and pineneedles under the hood. The car has been sitting for the last 2 years cause I haven't had time to mess with it, so now I'm ready to get down and dirty. I had several friends help me with the motor install about 5 years ago so there's no telling how it happened. I don't even remember.
In this pic, you can see the two hoses that go to the catch can.
I just touched the bottom hose and it about fell out on its own from the pcv. That can't be good.
Nothing is connected to the front plug on the valve cover.
And the factory hose goes from the throttle body to the rear plug and goes around to the other side and plugs into the driver valve cover at the rear.
From what I read on the ls1howto.com site, that's no where near right. Could this cause the problems I am having?

I don't think that is why it is burning oil like that. I would do a leak down of the motor and see what you have. Like others said it might be valve seals, it might be the rings, or it might be a combination of the PVC, valve seals, and the rings. If the motor is making good oil pressure I see no reason to tear the whole thing down if it is just the rings. I have heard of rings in tractor engines seizing up if the tractor has sat for awhile, maybe this happened here??? Not sure how realistic that would be. I would start with general diagnostics first and go from there.

We chased a problem on a friends car for weeks and finally figured it out. It was consuming about 1qt every 200 miles. Ended up being that there were hairline cracks in the cylinder head right around the rocker arm area. It was pulling oil from there on decel/idle conditions. It was a tough one to find. You could see the cracks from looking down into the intake runners. We were baffled at first when the compression test came back with flying colors cause we initially thought it was rings.
