Default y-pipe glowing red after cam swap

I swapped a world cup cam into a friends 98 T/A this weekend. Everything is stock w/ the exception of a K&N and he has removed the exhaust behind the y-pipe and put on a turn down. Tonight when he got home he pulled up to his house got out and happened to turn around and look at his car. A glow was flowing out from under it so he opened the hood to see if anything was on fire. Nothing under the hood was glowing so he looked under the car and he said his y-pipe was cherry red. Any ideas of the cause of this? I know the manifolds are a little restrictive but that really doesn't make sense why the y-pipe is glowing. Any ideas would be great

Thanks,
..RJ..

If the Y-pipe has cats- they're fried.

Pass side cat in in the Y on a 98. That is probably what was glowing.

I understand that lean conditions run very hot but what I cant figure out is why the y-pipe is glowing and not the cats. Wouldnt that be the most restrictive part of his exhaust system? also why would the end of the system be the hottest. I asked about the cat and he said it wasnt the pass side cat it was the y-pipe

i've had headers all the way down to the pipes attached glowing before. I was running extremely lean in my 69 camaro. It happens that I had the power brake booster hose not on the back of the carb, but never-the-less it was blowing flames in to the exhaust and heated em up a bit. richened it up(plugged the hose in), and all was normal again.

Now you say World cup cam. what are the specs?

This is the direction I was going. I don't think it could be the GAC cam due to the PV clearance issues. it would never had started without valve reliefs

Grand Am Cam 239/251 .571/.571 106. I had a car do that once. It was a 1986 Cutlass that had sat for about 10 days in very cold weather. The mechanic said that when I started it it was probably very rich, and burning the fuel in the pipes or at the front of the cat.

He better be looking into internal mods to allow him to spin to or well above 7k along with very steep gears and/or a very high stall converter.

Bent valves will cause that condition also.

Well I still havent had a chance to look at the car since these conditions have came about but He called today and said that he decided to taked it for a ride when he returned the drivers side converter was red and a little of the y-pipe on that side is also red. Also he said that he pulled the plug on cyl. 1 and it was kind of white. Not to bad but a little. I know this is a lean condition but again I haven't had the time to look at it. I'll post more info when I get it. Again thanks for your insights.

Kind of white no. 1 plug?

That is way lean! Have him double check all his AIR, EGR, and brake booster hose connections. Make sure nothing is loose to where it can draw in unmetered unfiltered air. More than likely that is what is making it lean out.
