Well thanks for all the advice guys!
I bought the heli coil, but prior to using it, I thought I'd try a 7/16's tap I had on hand. I threaded the hole and to my amazement it got about 4-5 threads that held good. I was able to use a spare shop bolt and it held very well. Didn't even have to take the head off. I got very lucky and again I thank everyone for all their help

yep
right now I have to get a bigger washer for the 120mm bolt I bought from Napa to allow me to get crank pulley back on. Once that's on I have to check to make sure she turns over freely and PV clearence is ok. After that shoudl only take a little bit to get buttoned up and should be done relatively shortly . Looking forward to fire it up.
I shoud pull the computer tonight to get sent off to madwolf. Also need to get a set of #30fms injectors :O

Just a tip on the crank pulley....
Place it in an old saucepan and cover with old engine oil. Heat it up on the stove (alternatively heat the whole thing gently with a torch). Remove, wipe down, put on and wind up the bolt. (Wipe and replace pan in the kitchen before the wife realises!)
You will not believe how easily it goes on.
Have a beer while it cools down and then torque the new bolt.
Works for me!
Tom.

Sounds like I have your lucky streak, I 've strip a header bolt in a cast iron head, it gets everybody some times. Just be glad you didnt strip the balancer bolt in the crank, i managed to do that once, not on my LS1 though on an old SBC, and learned my lesson.
