Default cylinder wall liners stick up above block????

friend is getting ready to do a head and cam swap on his 2002 TA....he took off the heads and when scraping the block with a gasket scraper (razor blade) he noticed that the liners seem to stick up just a slight bit above the block (the scraper would sometimes catch on the liner). Is this normal? When I did my swap, I just used lacquer thinner and a rag to clean up everything, so I didn't see if my liners were out of the block.

Does it matter if the short block is stock or if its a stroker (as far as the liners being out of the block)?

Thanks

SDB

They were pretty flat on my 2002 block. Was the old headgasket indented where it sealed up?

If they're sticking up more than .002" I'd be concerned (based on which HG are used).

I wouldn't use Cometics if they're sticking up like that!

It's possible you could be scraping the block with the razor blade (which you shouldn't use) and it is taking away the aluminum off the block and not sharp enough to cut the sleeves (which are iron, I think). Use a plastic scraper.

Sleeves sticking a few thou up from the block is actually a good thing. It is normal for sleeves to "sink" in aluminum blocks, the higher the sleeve protrudes, the better - up to the point that the gasket can no longer seal the water passages.
