Default South's planned setup:5.7 TEA 1,ASA,LS6 TPIS OVAL,QTP HVMC,etc. Object:Usable Power

* Retitled my post to include components and objective.

Budget setup for a 4th gen F-bod car I intend to beat up on (roadcourse) and cruise around in. Will most probably be a stripper '98 given budget restraints. Stock cube, stock bottom end ls1. Nothing fancy, but it should lope pretty hard and be loads of fun.

-85mm Lid
-Pace 85mm MAF
-TPIS 76x90mm Oval TB
-TPIS 76x90mm Oval LS6 Intake
-TEA Stage 1 5.7L Heads (Using Comp 987 duals)
Intake #'s (Healthy Low & Mid lift numbers)
.1 73
.2 144
.3 209
.4 252
.5 283
.55 296
.6 294.2

-GMPP ASA cam (226/236 .525/.525 110)
-ASP Crank pulley
-Katech belt tensioner
-QTP HVMC LT's (Woohoo! Price reduction! )
-TSP X-pipe, bullets
-3.42 gear, 10 bolt
-Spec III clutch
-Suspension (will call Sam Strano), brakes, cooling will be addressed.
-Bolt in 6 pt.
-2 race seats & harnesses.
-17" Nitto 555 RII's all around.
Summer/Fall '06

I knew you couldn't stay away from f-bodies too long ( ).
Sounds like a good plan.

I'll discuss milling with TEA, but any guess beforehand as to how much I should deck (if any)?

Thanks!

I must confess, altough I understand duration, lift, lsa, etc. (and what to expect from those numbers), I don't know how to read a cam card, analyze lobes mathematically for valve events, calculate ideal quench, etc.
Flow numbers are easier to understand however.

My last setup surprised the hell out of me. The more I threw at it, the more it gave. Cam only, it gave healthy numbers. Added TEA 5.3 1.5's and again, healthy numbers. Threw on the FAST90 and HVMC's and BAM- 460+rwhp monster. It was not a well rounded setup until the very end, when power was available everywhere. Before the 90 and HVMC's it was very peaky- not much going on down low.

This setup will in no way come near the peak numbers I saw on the old setup.
Objective is a car that I can drive the **** out of (with a very usable, meaty powerband across the rev range), without worrying about; spinning the motor too high, spring maintenance, valve float, etc.

I decided to go with the TPIS oval intake, as I've read some pretty interesting things about it that rival and even surpass FAST90 (and there's no way in hell I'm buying another FAST TB ).

This car, not being my daily driver (as my previous car was) will see lots of roadcourse track time, occasional trips to the strip, and last but not least, strike fear into the heart of the snotnozed kid down the block who wakes my son up every night with his raspy, tin exhaust modded BMW M3.

Looks like you'll have a really wide and useable power band. You have heads with peak flow right where you want it for this cam. The 90/90 will help all around, as well as a bit more with the low end. My only suggestion would be to maybe up the gears (at least a 3.73 since you don't have huge cubes to work with for low end torque). Other than that, looks good.

Any links to the comparisons made between TPIS and FAST setups?

JRod's intake comparo from last year:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/132102-dyno-test-stock-ls6-tpis-ls6-fast.html

As for the gears, 3.42's will be better suited for RR I think. I can always step up to 3.73's if need be, as you state. No 4.10's.

I can't weld. Don't have $600-$1K to give someone to weld them in for me.
I can drill though.

I'm not looking to make it NHRA legal for 11's, just want some protection for the roadcourses.

How about a set of 1.8 CRANE variable lift rockers. Should pick up some useful trq and extra ponies.

LMAO!!! Carlos i knew it wasn't going to be long till you got another car to mod. Since it wont be your daily driver, least you can do alittle more for performance and not have to worry how it would drive street wise. When i finally decide on the cam i want, and install it i can always take care of that M3 for you

Trust me, I'd do max effort if I would not be roadracing with it.

Valvetrain strain on a max effort setup wouldn't be a good idea for RR (though plenty of guys use LG grinds for RR)- I guess it's all about proper lifter and spring setup. Also, you don't want to spin your stock bottom end over 6K rpm for long periods of time, therefore, the "usable power" need. I've always like the ASA, so I'm going to give it a go- it gives an incredible tq curve and provides increadible pull upper mid range for a cam with such low lift, plus it's about the meanest cam I've heard besides a TRex.

As for the kid down the street, I'll get in touch with you. Bugger still revs at me when I'm working on the lawn (he remembers my SS and used to see me working on my POS 5.0 that I got rid of).

Well if you ever need help with anything you know where to find me
Besides i think if the guy in the M3 saw you with a new car, and working on it everyday he would know his time is coming.

I had to get rid of that thing. Using it as a daily driver, jail awaited me. I can't control myself on the street, hence, my sig.
Since then, I've gone to race school and I'm more focused on sanctioned events. Doesn't mean I won't tear up the streets in this new ride on the weekend, just reducing my chances of getting in trouble as much as I can.

Yeah you have to have some real good self-control behind the wheel of an F-body, vette, anything with power. **** i know theres lots of times where i like to take my car to the limit but have to restrain myself. But good to see your getting back into the rythm of things carlos.

Take it as a compliment, he probably admires you.

Good luck with the setup!

Yeah right, if the kid drives an M3 he probably thinks he is gods gift to man. Or that his car can beat anything because it has "M Power". He just hasn't run across a car that will hand him his *** bad enought for him to realize that the world he thinks he lives in is just a fantasy, and that in the real world american cars dominate.
