How big a cam w/ 918's

I got a friend who is gonna run a 228/232, .585/.595 114 w/ LS6 heads. Do you think running 918 valve springs is a good idea?

Lithium Jan 16, 2006 11:37 PM

Should be fine. Kinda pushing it IMO.

PREDATOR-Z Jan 16, 2006 11:39 PM

918's will be plenty.

orangeapeel Jan 16, 2006 11:40 PM

I run 918's on bigger. no problems.

SouthFL.02.SS Jan 16, 2006 11:41 PM

Yes sir. Although 2 years ago, everyone on here would have said otherwise. 4 years ago, people ran from 918s. Goes to show how things change.

Lithium Jan 16, 2006 11:41 PM

Damn lol. Nevermind then.

Dmoney Jan 16, 2006 11:48 PM

I was just being cautious, cuz I dropped a valve with a 918 back in the day.

orangeapeel Jan 16, 2006 11:51 PM

Yeah, it can happen with any setup.

SouthFL.02.SS Jan 16, 2006 11:51 PM

Correct, back in the day, 918's had a bad batch.

Patriot Gold duals or PRC duals are a good budget dual spring option, for added sense of security.

orangeapeel Jan 16, 2006 11:53 PM

And that is what I will be doing soon.

Greg_E Jan 17, 2006 04:59 AM

I don't know if people are using the 918's with the XER lobes with success, but would like to know, seeing as I am installing the 224/224 .581/.581 114 XER and the heads currently have the 918's installed.

orangeapeel Jan 17, 2006 05:09 AM

I know that people are using them on the XER lobes. I think most people though do switch eventually to a dual spring in the end though. Mine are XE.

PREDATOR-Z Jan 17, 2006 05:11 AM

Really???
That is ammazing, because that is exactly what they recommend and 921's as an upgrade.

I've personaly run .610 lift on 918's with no issues, quite the contrary, more power, when I swapped the stock valves/duals for LS6 valves/ 918's on the same head,
11 rwhp extra on the same day.

slow trap Jan 17, 2006 07:21 AM

i have the 918s on a cc 228/228 on xer lobes and had no issues. they are rated for a "conservative" .600 lift.the 918s will be fine.

SideStep Jan 17, 2006 07:33 AM

Installed correctly they will have no problem at that lift with XE-R profiles....

Red99TA Jan 17, 2006 08:29 AM

.603" lift here and no problems after 8K daily driven miles

what would be an adverage hp diff between 918s and say prc golds?

i have the prcs on stock heads right now with a f13 595/585 and i know there lobe is pretty agressive

i like the added security but im wondering how much i could gain form going lighter

i will be getting some headsthis spring

I would at least shim them for a little more pressure when running them at close to their max lift. A few months back a Tech from Comp posted as to how this was accomplished and results earned. It was pretty cool. Searching should find it easily.

JB00SS Jan 17, 2006 11:32 AM

918'S HERE! Comp 232/238 .595/.605. Comp did recommend these springs and told me that they would actually handle more!
