On the oil consumption issue be sure to replace the valve stem seals first. Those are more likely to let oil into the cylinder... = burning oil, plus the pcv systems on the LSx engines are notoriously bad. I deleted my pcv system to de-clutter and one of the benefits was not having oil in the intake. If you're burning oil because of piston ring blow-by then HELL YES you need to rebuild.

I made this thread because of this:
http://www.ls2.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=36764

On another board someone is gabbing about how LS1s are so unreliable and are so often rebuilt due to piston slap and oil consumption bla bla bla.

Just trying to see the real side of the story.

The real story is there were some instances of this years ago. Some of the cases may have been related to over-revving a cold aluminum motor and some of it was GM's fault. The good thing is that if the engine was going to have the piston slappage, it showed up within the first few thousand miles so if you're buying a used car, just listen to it. It's not been a huge issue as far as I've seen over the last few years.
A lot of people with the oil comsumption have done a catch can mod and cleared it up as was mentioned.
