Default how large of a cam can I fit under my AFRs

Guys, I have a stock bottom on my motor, all the bolts ons.

I have a set of AFR 205s milled .20 off, and a stock Gm MLS gasket ( quench either .051 or.054 depending on who you ask)

Im thinking of switching out my Tr224 for a little larger cam.

How large can I go with the heads on without the valves making smilie faces on my pistons.

I know you can safely step up to an F13 112+4 with those specs. This is the cam I have and I went through AFR, Futral, TSP etc... finding out a sure safe max without having to flycut. You can probably go a little bigger but this is the only cam I researched since it's what I have.

I PMd futral last week about the bad batch of F-13 that were made, and they never got back to me. I wanted to get the batch number. I missed out ona deal.

It's all in valve timing. You can fit a 250/.650" if you time it right.

Phil, See my sig for some reference. No flycutting here. Before, I was running a 224/228 .581/.588 lift cam with 1.7 rockers.

Byter,
The largest lift you have was .583

and that was not problems milled .024 off and the .045 gasket?

Sounds like I can to at last .588 lift

LIFTS have little effect on PTV clearance.
What you have to watch are the valve events (VE's), durations and LSA.

You might as well measure it... to know for sure...

BTW, your greatest lift occurs after TDC once the piston is going back down the bore and pulling the charge in... At some point the intake valve is chasing the piston down. The issue becomes critical at the point where the valve is moving faster down the bore then the piston is. This "valve speed" is dependent on physical cam/lobe events. Your P to V will be at the worse somewhere after TDC... again I would just measure it and get as much cam as you can and not break the .080 intake rule… If you go a little too big (to close) just fly-cut a little for the difference…

That's the thing, I wanted to buy the cam that fits and have everything installed at once.

If I wait , measure, and then purchase, the process may be to long. Im happy being under a window, rather than over it and cutting.

My other question is, my corrent cam is a 224/ 224 .563 lsa 114. Will I gain much out of a cam that's maybe a 228/228 .588 ish on a 114

if its 10-15 RWHP gain. Ill leave in what I have

Going to a 228/228 114 cam over what you have won't gain you but 5 rwhp. If you want something that will fit and make lots more power and mid-range torque, try one of these: 223/227 .637/.639 110LSA (+0). New cam by Thunder Racing made specifically for use with ported heads and is intended to satisfy enthusiasts looking for the most possible power under the curve. The torque potential of this cam is insane! Very high dynamic compression. The duration at .200" is equivalent to a 230/234 Comp XE-R cam and you get even more lift! Just the ticket for those AFRs. I'm sliding this cam in my car very soon. Stay posted for the results.

I just looked on Thunder Racing's website and didn't see this cam. (223/227 .637/.639 110LSA) It must not be on there yet . This is one I'm really interested in. I was going to do with TR224. I want the good power under the curve.

You won't see it on their website for a while. They just got their first one today. I'm going to stick it in my car in a week or two. I'll post up results. Once we have solid dynos, I'm sure Thunder will begin selling it to the masses. Basically, the cam is a no-brainer. The Comp LSK lobes are proving to be bad to the bone. This one uses LSKs on the intake and exhaust!

(sorry for the thread hi-jack)

you have the set up I want. Did you have to cut your pistons ?
did you notice any differance between the 224 and the 228?
If I can stay in the country long enough, I plan the have the head installed may

No fly cutting. I did the cam and shaved the heads at the same time so i dont know which made the most, but it made a huge difference in the way the car feels!!! Hurry up and get them on!!!
