Default How much HP does it take to turn the A/C compressor

Why can't it be rigged up like they water pumps are on some cars? They have an electric motor to run the water pump so it's not pulling power from the engine?

With a motor like this???

No need to. When you floor it a clutch disengages the A/C.

I know it doesn't run at WOT, I like having A/C on the 100+ days. So, if I can move it and keep it I'm gonna try.

it is possible to get an AC system that is not belt driven. I do not think it wpould be worth it though. What do you need the extra room for, are you running a turbo??

Ill bet it takes quite a bit of force to turn the compressor. It would probably require a pretty big motor, and therefore would put a large strain on the laternator. From what ive heard, car a/c's are between 20,000 and 50,000 BTUs. Thats much more than a household unit.

an electric compressor will require a lot of amperage to keep it running.

Well you gotta give up comforts to go fast!! It probably would not be worth it to spend all the extra $$ to get a modified AC system.

Civic Hybrid
The final benefit of a hybrid is that the gas engine shuts off when you come to a full stop, thereby saving fuel. In the first Civic hybrid, if the air conditioning was on and the econ button was not engaged, the engine wouldn’t shut down. This latest hybrid solves that problem by adding an electric-motor-driven portion to the A/C compressor. So, at a stop, the electric compressor keeps the cabin cool. As soon as you lift your foot off the brake, the gas engine whirs to life again.
