Default Lasershop's Patriots reflowed

Sent one of my heads to Gunnar after extensive hand finishing to be reflowed.
Note the ports both intake and exhaust are smooth as glass and shine like chrome. These are LQ9 heads with 2.055 intake valves. Chambers have been opened up to 76cc.

Out of the box flow#'s ( Int and Ex):
.100 71.4 / 64.6
.200 189.5 / 121.9
.300 197.9 / 154.4
.400 243.9 / 190.6
.500 275.7 / 208.8
.550 290.4 / 216.4
.600 303.0 / 224.5

This is Gunnars email:
We have got your flow numbers ready. The intake seemed to do well. The exhaust has dropped somewhat. We like to see a 70% or more ratio between the exhaust and intake. So along with the flow numbers, we are including the % for each range.

.100 76.5 / 70.7 92%
.200 158.8 / 134.3 84%
.300 223.2 / 172.5 77%
.400 267.3 / 190.4 71%
.500 288.1 / 199.3 69%
.550 294.7 / 202.6 68.8%
.600 301.2 / 206.7 68.6%

We couldn't find your first flow sheet, but it looks like your flow on the exhaust dropped around 10-15 points on the .500 up lifts. This could be due to some material removal. If you have any questions, please let us know. We will return to these to you today. BTW, these heads look great! The pics do not really do them justice until you see them in person. You have a lot of time and effort in these. They will still perform well and look absolutely great on the car !!!
Thank you,
Gunnar Bowlin

Undoubtedly if I roughed up the intakes the numbers would improve but I am pleased with the increase throughout the midrange where the valve spends most of its time. Thanks for everything Gunnar!!

VERY interesting. Thanks for posting the results!

The chambers are now 76, but what were they before?

Average flow before on the intake was 213.5 and 160.8 on the exhaust. After it was 219.2 and 162.3. The average flow went up slightly more than 1% on the intake and exhaust! Great job man.

I wonder how these will perform in regards to how they would previously...

BTW, this should be in the internal section.

uh oh, now everyone's going to think smoothing the intake runners increases flow. How much material did you actually remove?

Just rid them of tool marks and blended all the guide features. Spent a lot of time on the bowl area. Post is not meant to endorse anything. Im convinced there is a science and benefit to port texture. This IS though a comparison between CNC'ed and glass smooth port walls. A textured wall would have most certainly increased the flow at the top end, but those low to mid numbers are not bad at all IMO.

It's only fair to keep in mind the difference between dry flow and wet flow. It seems as though the port is an overall better flowing port for air but probably not for fuel. The fuel won’t flow as well with the smooth/polished surface. Maybe the intake port would be better overall (wet and dry flow) if it would have had a rougher surface? There are imperfections in some cnc programs that hand finishing can take out.

Also, what was the intake port volume and what do you think it is now?

No problem on flowing the heads again Ron. Guys these heads look awesome!! We have all seen the pics, but they do not show how good of a job Ron did on these. Definitely will be a head turner when he has everything together.

Look at the .200 flow# drop and the exhaust drop,
This flow doesn't mean that they will perform well in real motor environment. Atomisation is gonna be seriously affected.
Super Bling but, polishing intake runners damages the performance.
Ouside bling is awsome.
