What's the best cam?

What would be the best cam to go with for an LS1 with bolt ons, and why?

98Z28CobraKiller Aug 30, 2006 11:51 AM

Use the search button. This subject has been covered atleast 100 times and there is no "best". It depends on the intended use and the required drivabilty.

S3R Aug 30, 2006 11:57 AM

Surely there must be one that stands out as better for performance/driveability.

SUTTERERMAN85 Aug 30, 2006 11:59 AM

there are like a 100+ good cams. there is no BEST overall cam. you need a cam that will work best for you. you really need to ask yourself what are you going to be doing with the car and how much are you going to be driving it? use the SEARCH button too.

Best cam=figure out your application whether it is race or street then use the search button.

SVT THIS Aug 30, 2006 01:36 PM

Give him a break, search is down. But, some things you need to consider on paper before you buy a cam new LS1tech'er is....

What heads, bolt ons, intake will you be running? Street car? Daily driver? Track only? Street/strip? Street race? Weekend car? Goals-nice DD, some bad manners, disgusting, insane? How much do you want to spend on valvetrain, rear end, suspension, tranny? How big of a cam could you drive everyday? Live in the country? The city? Commute? Want power down low, midrange, up top? Plan on running gears or stall? Any weight reduction?

There are probably at least 467 other variables to consider. Trust me, I posted roughly a thousand questions over cam selections, as have most members here. When the search feature starts working again you could read for a year and never find a "best" cam.

I know this does not have anything to do with this post, but what is up the search being so jacked up. plus you can not blame the guy if the search engine is down.

allngn_c5 Aug 30, 2006 01:51 PM

Damn everyone is slamming this guy. I am a big LG Motorsports supporter and they have 4 kick ass cams for the LS1. G5X1 and X2 are more daily drivable and less peak hp. The G5X3 and X4 are both wicked. All out hp/tq on the top with decent mid and low rpm power. The G5X3 and X4 also require flycutting with milled heads, and significant Valvetrain upgrades. 921 comp dual valve springs and hardened push rods, also Titanium valve seats. This will let you run the X4 to 7000 rpms, but not all day everyday. Big cams need big maintenance, new valve springs every 30k miles. Keep that in mind. Hope this helps you out a little bit. The number to LG Motorsports is in my sig. Ask for Bobby.

asking "what is the best cam" is like asking what is the best topping on a pizza. some like pepperoni, some like sausage, some the works, some like plain. there is no "best cam". now if you said "which is the best cam for an A4 w/a 3200 stall, 3.23's, N/A motor, looking to hit mid 11's", then we could help you. you gotta be more specific bud.

what mods do you have? what are your goals? is it your daily driver? what tranny do you have? gear ratio? etc...

huh? but i was told my cam was the best so i bought it. you mean I dont have the best cam?? :soapbox:

GuitsBoy Aug 30, 2006 03:14 PM

Bigger cam = more power.
Bigger cam = less drivability.
more power = less drivability.
weigh your options and make a decision.
