LS engine block weights and difference's
 
I'm seriously looking at buying an LS6 block and building the motor how I want it in the garage then just swapping the LS1 out of my camaro and dropping the finished motor in. I found a cast iron LS2 block and an aluminum LS6 block, I can't decided whether to go cast iron LS2 route or just stick with the aluminum LS6 style motor. How much more does the cast iron LS2 weigh than the LS6? The LS2 is also about four hundred dollars cheaper than the LS6 block. I'm just shooting for 425 - 450 horsepower N/A with a good set of heads, healthy cam and forged internals. So, should I stick with the 346ci. motor or go with the 364ci. motor? Also will all my factory sensors, accessories and everything bolt up to the LS2 cast iron block? It's listed as an LQ4 actually, same thing though. Thanks

BTW, I have a 1998 Z-28 camaro too just for reference.

That is a hard decision. I think that the 6.0 will make a little power and low end torque, though not much (assuming the same head on each block).
I would probably end up using the aluminum block because I would always wonder how weight I would have saved...

FYI there is no such thing as an iorn LS2. I think your refering to the 6l truck block, and its around 100lbs heavier.

I would buy a aluminum LS2. It is a 4" bore and 100lbs lighter.
New they are only $1,000

irons 88lbs heavier if i remeber correctly.100+ more if your talking original sb chevy. id go aluminum. unless your going to add enough power over the aluminum to make up for the weight. iron wouldn't make any sense to me.

better take into consideration of the $$$ extra parts needed to do the LS1-LS2 conversion.

all the LS1 parts swap over to the 6.0L iron block, this is not the case with the 6.0L LS2 aluminum block

Thanks, yes it was the truck block. I found them on the GM performance parts website. So the actual Aluminum LS2 won't match up? Is it just the knock sensor's or is the crank trigger different too? I'm trying to get the most power on a budget which is why I'm considering the LS2 but I don't think I'd get that much more power out of it compared to a LS6. What would ya'll do in this situation?
