Not sure what's wrong...
 

So me and a buddy had a little friendly run the other day. I hit the 150 shot, it felt good, then POP!! I heard a loud pop, followed by a lot of pinging, popping, and smoking. Still had oil pressure, it wasn't running hot. I got home and popped the hood and found coolant everywhere. Pulled the plugs and every single plug was melted and some where missing ceramic. 6 of the plugs had oil on them. I figure it's a head gasket, but could it be piston too? I don't know what oil on the plugs generally means....

Anyone think it's a coincedence(sp) that this happened about 3 runs after I deleted the pcv system?

I am going to be thinking of a piston, maybe even a cylinder sleve cracked? or a head gasket and piston both.

i have seen what your motor has been through, and i would think it was about time for a rebuild? lol or has it been already.

what do you mean deleted the PCV? you just have breathers?

Well I put a breather on and capped all the openings on the valvecovers and throttle body. It is the stock shortblock, never rebuilt. I think now it's time for an iron 408 :)

Since you said everyone of the plugs was melted. I would think those pistons are probably gone or at least I wouldn't feel comfortable with them anymore. Since we know you or your motor isn't new to nitrous I wouldn't say setup. Maybe you lost some fuel pressure or something though. I would pull the heads to replace the head gaskets and have a look at the pistons meybe you'll get lucky and they are fine. Besides the obvious if there are chunks missing. Look at them real close and see if any appear to be rotated different then the others, I had a friend with a 5.0 had a rod twist and the valves no longer went into the reliefs. You could have a broken ringland which so look for scratches on the cylinder

why would the 150 have messed anything up? I thought you had it tuned before on the nitrous??

same thing happened on my cobra. one day i was running an STI, went into boost, pulled past the STI and then i heard a loud pop noise followed by the pinging noise and smoking as Trmn8r described. later, i pulled the plugs and every last one of them were covered in oil. it turned out to be a 3 cracked/broken pistons and 2 lifted ringlands.

i can gurantee you that once you pull those heads, you find at least one broken/cracked piston or at least one lifted ringland. that engine is done. time for a 408. :devil:

The stock pistons have probably had enough lol. I can't count the bottles I've put through that motor.

We all know its gonna happen sean anyway Rebuild is a must though but check it out i'm sure there some pieces of pistons IN CC :judge:

That's what I love to see. Somebody who blew their motor up and isn't bothered by it. Welcome to the club my friend!

Don't discount a bent valve or valves. That would cause the popping (if it's a bent exhaust valve, fuel is getting past it to the exhaust and backfiring) and a bent valve guide would let the oil in. It doesn't sound like the most likely possibility, but it still is one. However, with the nitrous shot on stock pistons, I would say it's a lot more likely the rings blew or a piston did. The oil getting past those rings would certainly cause the detonation as well. As for the coolant, the only way that is getting out is the head gasket or busted radiator (or hoses). Could be a combo of all these things. And if it is, nice job :thumb:

have you drained the oil to look for metal or coolent?

simple way to find out if the pistons are good is a compression test.. thats what happened to my 346ci in the bottle too but mine blew oil everywhere..

doesn't sound good. looks like we may see a stronger Termin8r in the future

what is your total rwhp on the 150 shot?I was just wanting to know cuz i have heads going on here in a wk and plan to spray in the late spring

I haven't drained the oil or coolant yet, I will be doing a compression test in about a week and a half. No time until then.

I knew it was gonna happen sooner or later, the stock shortblock took one hell of a beating before it let go. Still not sure what setup I will be going with, lookin more towards a 383 now though....
