IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
I was thinking is gutting the cats
even worth doing?
What are the advantages and dissavatages
I know for one , it wil be
a little bit hard for some people
to pass the emmissions testing.
But I for one do not have a problem
with that , where I live
IS THIS MOD WORTH ANYTHING ON
AN LS1 F-BODY

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
Blackout increased 11 rwhp and 23 rwtq.
I noticed SOTP BIGTIME. Also noticed MAJOR traction loss

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
I gutted the cats on my 2000 WS6 (stock head cam) and picked up 2 rwhp. The drone that came with it was not worth the minimal increase in power. I gutted the 3" cats on my 400 rwhp heads/cam LS1 and picked up 0 rwhp!
I now hate the sound. In my cases at least, gutting cats did little or nothing.

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
This drone and rasp that you get from ORPs is really dependant on your cat back. Some have none, others have a lot. The quieter cat backs don’t really have these issues...

RPM WS6 is absolutely right. Gutting the cats pretty much accetuates the drone more and just makes your normal exhaust tone louder.
Ergo my LOUDMOUTH

I went with Straight line performance off road pipes, Hooker weld in muffler.. I do have a little rasp between 2200 and 2500. I have never dynoed the car but once I took the cats out the tires fried alot easier.. I think it was a good gain.. When I open the cut out, it is loud as hell..

I have to respectfully disagree.I have the SLP Dual/Dual Catback which is one of the quietest catbacks available with the Mac Headers & ORY.The drone at 2200-2600 is terrible.Put a dynomax 16" bullet in the Intermediate pipe. That helped but didn't cure it.With gutted cats & stock manifolds, there was no drone or rasp whatsoever.Just deepened the sound of the dual/dual a bit.

I can understand that.
Exhaust tone is very subjective. Everyone’s ear hears it different, and everyone’s impression of what sounds good is somewhat different. That's why it's so hard to give exhaust advice...

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
I've got the LM and when I gutted my cats this spring, it actually lessened the drone to some extent. My cats had "issues" though. Definitely sounds good now though.

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
Thought about this many times. Never done it myself before. what is the best way to remove this bee house stuff ? Guess you guys open them up ? Can it be broken up easily or a hole drilled though it easily ?
I was thinking a couple of 1" holes or so through the middle rather than total removal...

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
I helped a friend do it to his jeep, just shoved a crowbar and screwdriver down there until it all came out. If you just drill holes I think pieces might break off and drive you insane with the clanging.

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
I have a set of 2001 factory gutted cats, they are in great shape and would better than hollowing out your own that way you could always put them back if needed, I am selling them for $50, I just figured I bring it up while on the topic. I have a flowmaster in place of my WS6 muffler and with the gutted cats it sounded NICE!, I jut put on some longtubes so I can't use these anymore.

Re: IS GUTTING THE CATS WORTH IT
All you guys are talking about sound, I'm talking about power. On a '00-02 F-Body, gutting factory cats is only worth about 1-2 rwhp max...even with a big shot of nitrous. Been there, done that. Sound is worse too.
Now if you swap to headers and a real off road pipe, there's some real power there...but not gutting the factory cats...trust me.
