Default Need help Low oil pressure: not pump

My oil pressure was running about 6-10 at idle and about 20psi while under throttle. So i figured it was the pump, swapped it out and still getting the same pressure Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and/or an easy way to check without tearing the whole engine apart?

thanks
mike

Try changing the sensor, its on the top of the motor back behind the intake manifold. Was the o-ring still in perfect shape on your oil pump pickup tube?

If its not one of those two things, it could be some really bad stuff....expensive bad stuff.

A couple of things - did it happen suddenly, such as when you were running your engine hard? Do you have a pronounced engine knock of some kind? If so, then you could have spun a bearing The easiest way to check would be to pull the oil pan and check your engine bottom end (or look for the dreaded metal items on your oil plug).

HOWEVER, before I did that, I would first check oil pump (which you already have), oil pressure sensor, oil filter, etc. to see if it is something much easier to fix.

Iam Having the exact same problem. i have also changed the Pump the oring looked in fairly good shape. At this point I beleive it to be the sending unit I have been running the car and have cut open the Oil filter and can find no trace of bearing wear At idle it stays at 0 after you bring it up on Rpm as it is coming down right before it hits 5 PSI it just drops to 0. The only thing I can think is the sending unit. Let me know if you come up with something or how it turns out for you.

Thanks guys,
The O-ring was in perfect shape. I noticed it running low after i brought it out from its winter nap, but that dosent mean it wasnt low last year, i might not have noticed it. I just had the oil changed before i got the pump hoping that was the cause so i dont know if there were any metal chunks in it.

If it was a bad filter wouldnt the pressure go up not down?

How hard is it to get to the sending unit?

Is there any way to check for bad bearings without tearing the engine apart?

Outlawten5, good luck with your and let me know how it turns out as well

thanks again
mike

I'd seriously consider changing the oil pressure sensor like JMX said. To check the bearings you would have to pull the motor out.

If you smoked a bearing, your oil will show it. Obviously look for metal in your oil, but also notice if there is any streaking, ( areas of the oil that are different in color than the rest. Pro Stocks right, you have to pull the motor to pull the oil pan. Took me 8 hours my first and only time I did it. Best of luck!

Well its confirmed my engine is toast. We put the new sending unit in and its running the same psi. so we cut open the oil filter and sure enough theres metal in the filter as well as in the oil that drained out around the filter. Going to take everything off and try to get rid of it now if i can then i guess ill just wait for the next model to come out in a couple of years. So there will soon be a 6lb pdyne for sale among other things.

That's a bummer. Was low oil pressure the only bad sign you had or did your car have any other performance related issues?

Spun a bearing here on sat. Man it tore me up but now I have big plans for the block. Got to look at it in a positive way....not only that I would spend more for a new car, plus aftermarket parts, then the new setup, and a new feel that I know I am going to enjoy Its too bad, losts of us are going through this , unless we just never payed attention, but so far I know at least 6 people that spun a bearing within 4 days...it sucks....but hey got to reach my goal of 3 months to get this done so...have something to look forward too.. More alot more HP coming soon..

Maybe the pan got a bit low?

I wonder if 40W would help anything.

His car seems to run just fine, If he hadnt told me I never would have known there was a problem with it. No knocking grinding or other odd sounds, but a lot of metal in the oil. doesnt look like steel, I think its aluminum or bearing material because it seems to have a dull appearance, not shiny.

For Gods sake, dont drive or run the car anymore. Get a Helms manual, & take the engine out, strip it all the way down to the bare block & inspect for damage. Clean it up, replace bearings & put it back together once you know everything is ok. If it runs fine right now, then you probably aren't past the point of no return. Any parts you need, you can get from the board here, or from Valvegod, who I believe lives right in your area. Be patient, take your time. Good luck.

Sounds like a bearing issue to me unfortunately. I would also do a leak down test as well.
If you need a budget shortblock buildup give Nick at ARE a call or I can find out some information for you.
You would need a good set of forged pistons with a cleanup of your stock bore. Reuse your stock rods and get a new crank from Valvegod for 300 bucks or look at an offset crank from Nick and run 360ci.
Shouldnt cost too much and you can reliably run 550 plus RWHP. Let me know if you need any assistance.
Best of luck man,
Chris

He's not driving it, but it can be difficult to see if the things we tried bring the pressure up if the engine is off.

If it was me, I would do a mechanical oil pressure test. Take oil sender out, install oil pressure gauge and see for sure what the oil pressure is. Then you will know which way to go.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, but i really think its time to cut my losses on this one. Ill do what i can to get it fixed if i can then sell it or if i cant get it fixed fill it full of heavy weight oil and sell or trade it to a dealer (wouldnt do that to a regular person) I could use the 600 bucks a month id save to pay off some bills and save up for a vette (or the new camaro when they come out ) btw im shortly going to have a few items for sale
6lb pdyne
38lb lucas injectors (brand new)
2 1400 cfm spall fans
maf translator
gms maf
mac y-pipe for headers (with or without cats- depending on my bro in law)
etc..
