Default Hooker LT's are in!

Got the headers in on the 8th, painted them and went through the instructions. got home from work the next morning, and instead of sleeping like i should have, i started the install

Instructions were very good, although according to them O2 extensions come with the headers, But I didnt get any, dont know if that was planned at one point and dropped but the instructions didnt get changed or if i just didnt get mine.

Comes with header bolts, and washers (I only got enough to do one side, so I have to get some from the store later today) also has header, AIR, and EGR gaskets.

They also said that a minimum of 36 inches of ground clearance was needed to install

The much debated issue of whether or not they have EGR/AIR/O2 provisions has been settled with a resounding affirmative

Got home from work this morning, and decided to try and fanagle the O2 connectors so they would reach without the extensions. I managed to do that by removing them from the wirelooms and re routing them farther rearward. pass side just reaches, driv side has plenty mroe space.

I had to make sure they were far enough back so i ran inside and got the pass header and put it next to the car, figured the O2 cnnector would work, then couldnt resist the temptation to see if that 36 inches was accurate. got under the car on the pass side (at about 20-22 inches) and had a little trouble at first, but decided to remove the heatsheild for the CAT (I suppose you could just bend it also) and it just ploped in place. It actualy took me longer (a LOT longer) to try and get the header bolted up. It would have been helpful to have a second pair of hads to hld the header up from the bottom, rather than try to hold the thing with one hand and line up the bolt wiht the other in such a small space (it was worsened by the fact it was still in the air)

I decided since the pass side was so easy i had to try the drivers side. that was a bit more involved. in the instructions Hooker says to remove the "oil passage diverter plate" its right above the oil filter. tried without removing and it was a no go. took that off, lost a small amount of oil.

The heat shield for the clutch line was also removed.

The next thing it says to remove is the steering shaft. I tried without doing it, for quite a while actualy, I ran into the casting block on the engine block, but the dremmel just wouldnt take enough off fast enough to make a diff. and i was also hitting the firewall. then i noticed that, sure enough, it was hitting the steering shaft. so i went ahead and removed that.

To do that you loosen or unbolt the bolt on the steering coulumn shaft nearest the firewall, and then remove the bolt on the shaft at the rack & pinion assembly. Make sure you take the bolt all the way out, the shaft is notched for the bolt and you cant remove it with it in even a little. use a screwdriver or prybar to push the shaft off the rack. Move it out of the way.

With that moved, the drivers side header dropped into place with a little wiggling.

NOTE: You can NOT put the steering shaft back in untill you have at lest one bolt in the header holdign it out of the way. the header will rest on the shaft and it wont line up properly, so do that after you get the header on.

Thats it so far, still have to put the valve covers on (was going to paint them), plugs wires, get the lockwashers for the drivers side, and EGR/AIR tubes. but thats all simple stuff. also need to get some heat resistant wire wrap for the O2 sensor wires.

only casualty was a shoe that was submerged in old oil in a somewhat related incident.

Sounds awesome, but its open header so thats expected.

Ground clearance is great, they hang slightly lower than my SLP SFCs but not as low as the fender mounting tab that every shop tries to jack on...

Floorboard clearance seems good too.

AWESOME!!
Keep us updated! I am VERY VERY interested to hear your results!
Does it look like a 3 inch cat would fit on without too much massaging of the floorboard?
Thanks,
Chris

Great news. Sounds like another good header option for the LS1. I am very interested in hearing some more results also. Especially dyno and track results.

Hey Freak,

you said that the air, egr and o2 provisions were provided.

What year is your car? I have a 2000 SS and that was my only worry. If these headers are set up to work on the 2000's then I will be getting them soon.

I should be getting my Y done on monday I hope, and dyno will follow shortly after

Only set off 2 car alarms that i know of. one was a good bit away, and the other i was idling by...

Hey Freak, I was all but ready to order the SLP LT's, but with the Hooker announcement, I'm holding off. Yours look great. I'm assuming that you got the "uncoated" headers, did you use Extreme heat header paint? Also, do you have any pics from atop the engine bay? Thanks and good luck!!

That looks awesome! I hope the paint doesn't burn up.

Have you hooked them up to your cat back? I was wondering if there was any rasp in the 2000 - 2400 rpm range.

I used the same paint on my old cars headers and i think it will be OK (it seemed like drying time was important, old car, painted them, put one on, had problems with the other so i didnt get it on till the next week, but drove it around with one header one manifold. so the paint on the other dried well and the dried one is the one that didnt peel), if no I may pull them again.

Gonna get a Y done up on monday, might get bullets in it to get rid of the "rasp" but i might not. right now it sounds good though, open header baby <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">
