I'm building a forged 346.

I'm getting Manley Pro series rods. Ross or JE custom nitrous pistons. And all the gaskets, head stud kit, and everything else from ARE... Ill see how this likes a 200 - 250 shot. And then ill slap on GTP Stage 2 heads, cam and a worked Holley intake and see what happens. Anyone else try this yet?

I'm about to start assembling mine

JE pistons, valve reliefs and inverted dome for 8.7:1 CR
Crower Billet rods, 6.125
stock crank
.010 over, stock block
katech billet mains
6.0 Truck heads, full port 2.02 intake/1.60 exhaust
ARP head studs
holley manifold (if it ever shows up) hogged out and shortened runners

and as much boost at it will take

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

That is likely waht I will build next. No need to worry about sleeves and all that. Not that I wouldn't like to have a big CID motor

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

ARE is putting the finishing touches on my 346cid solid roller motor. It's a tad overbored (not a big-bore resleeved block), with Ross custom pistons and Lunati Pro-Mod rods.

It's designed with some fairly high RPMs in mind. Hopefully it will be here by the end of next week. I should have the car running 2-3 days after that if all goes as planned...

Sounds interesting!!!!

Not to sure about the stock crank @ high rev's though. Seems like if you were gonna do this it would be with a 4340 forged crank that you would not worry about a thing, especially your first time investment on the engine...

But what do I know?????????????

This is what he has to say..

"2-3 shift 7937, 3-4 shift7900 and 7500 in 4th before letting off.

Also someone e-mailed and ask about the rotating assy.... Stock crank, Eagle H-Beam rods and Lunati pistons."

I don't think you can go to far past 7k on the stocker. But when did I say anything about high rev's ? I don't plan on running a really big cam. How much is the 4340 crank anyway? And where is a good place to get one?

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

I would say unless your going to get a stroker crank don't even worry with the forged crank. I think the 4" cranks are going for ~$2400 and a stock stroke forged crank isn't much cheaper. Give ARE a call and check with them.

As long as your keeping the rev's reasonable I think the stock crank can take quite a bit.

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

Mine will spin up to 8500 rpm's with a 4340 crank so I was a bit worried about my first time build but not anymore. I would have wasted $800-$1000 just working on the stock crank anyway...

BADZ,

You didnt waste anything. Ill prob do it sometime just for the hell of it. Besides forged crankshafts are cool.

Billet ones are cooler....when we gonna see those, anyway?

My setup is very similar to yours with the components except the holley intake, but I think I want to do a Iron Block.I think I will keep my compression somewhere between 8.5-9.0:1 as well.

Can you give a description (or pictures) of how you have your future fuel system setup? You can IM or E-mail me. I was thinking Aeromotive 1000 HP Fuel Pump with AN -10 lines running up front through an inline pump and using some stock components for return fuel?

EDIT: What kind of cam are you gonna run?

We are all going with a nice forged 346ci.. Mine should be done soon..

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but SE guys spin stock cranks to over 8000rpm. Nick feels that the stock crank will be fine and hold up well in my application, and it will be turning some serious rpms.

I couldn't justify spending over $2000 for a forged 3.622" stroke crank, and I wanted to stay stock displacement.

I guess we'll see how well Joe K's setup and my setup hold together, as they seem somewhat similar.

BADZ May 2, 2002 04:27 PM

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

Yes, the stock crank is a decent piece but its really a big boat anker and far from the 4340 light Lunati cranks that have been modified for quiker response @ higher rpm ranges. The lighter and less resistance you have, the faster you will achieve that rpm levels you are looking for....I will use my stock crank for a door weight which it is a heavy hog leg!!!

Oh also George, Craig ask me to ask you about that cam you had gotten from him, what you did with it??????

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

I'm gathering parts for one myself

.005 over JE pistons w/ valve reliefs
Lunati ProMod Rods (6.125")
balanced bottom end
SLP double roller timing chain
ported oil pump
etc.

I'm gonna be like George and rev the snot out of it

Guys,

Do any of you read NHRA National Dragster or the IHRA Drag Review? They have 4340 light weight cranks in there for a whole lot less an what you guys are talking about.

I don't know that much about building a motor but you may want to check it out.

I am also having a forged 346 being build at Thunder Racing right now.(should be in the Hot Rod next week, I hope)

Just my 2 cents.

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

Ok,
You need to be a member of the HHRA or IHRA to get them.(or have a buddy that is a member so you can read his).

In here they sell for $600.00 and up.

Yes, these are magazines.

No link direct to the mag by to the NHRA.com & IHRA.com.

I hope it is not a no no to talk about National Dragster or Drag Review on this site, They are not a sponsors. Maybe someone should talk to them or the conpanies that advertise in them about becoming a sponsor.

I hope this helps.

Re: I'm building a forged 346.

Bzzzt.

If you can find a brand new LS1 aftermarket crank for less than $2000 I will send you $20.

LT1 cranks are like <$1000 for forged.

We pay double or triple that.
