She's smokin....

You guys think I should forgo the leak down test and just go ahead and rering her?

I made a couple of runs last night and it wasnt smokin during the run. After the coastdown and turn on the return road I gave it a little gas and it started huffin blue smoke like I was sprayin for bugs. It went away after a few minutes.

It smokes a little on WOT runs on the street and uses about a quart every 600 miles.
It doesnt smoke on startup or at idle.

What do you guys think?

Re: She's smokin....

Stu, Mine does the exact same thing. Quite a few of us do. IMO its not the rings but the PCV situation. If the rings were bad it should smoke all the time. Mine doesnt smoke at start-up or idle, a little under heavy acceleration and pretty bad after high RPMs on decel.Ive seen quite a few manifolds off, and you would be amazed how much oil is under them. Mine really started doing it after my header install. Coincidence? I dont know. Ive heard recently about a LS6 valley cover replacement part some guys are trying. Im gonna see how they make out. My car has never run better, and no evidence of oil on the plugs . I really dont think its the rings. Im doing a H/k dgets even worse after that. I have 47k and use 1 qt of Mobil 1 every 1200 miles. Well get it figured out!!

Thanks Paul. Is there some kinda mod to do to get rid of that?

I think on that note I'll do a compression check first.

My car did the exact same thing after I put headers on. Never had an oil consumption prob. before that and now 1qt every 1500 miles.

Re: She's smokin....

Theres a few different things guys have tried with varying results. Inline filters, catchcans, the NEW pinhole PCV valve. I tried the new PCV valve and it didnt seem to help. Some guys are mounting the NEW pcv valve vertically. I dont remember who, but someone on this site was gonna post pictures and results of the LS6 valley pan mod very soon. Im anxious to see how that works. I wish I knew before I do my H/C package this week, but Ive been waiting so long for my heads, now that their here Im gonna do the install. Back a few pages on the internal mods you should see some oil consumption, and potential remedies.Stay in touch.

Re: She's smokin....

my is doing the same thing after header/cam install.. It will puff a small amount of blue smoke at a 6k rev.... But I haven't seen any huge oil consumption problems yet.

Re: She's smokin....

Paul....Dude I didnt do a test but I found #4 cylinder intake pushrod was bent to hell.

I guess thats why I am runnin slower than the other guys with my same mods. It was bent so bad that it was scored fom contact with the head.

I think while I got it down this far I might as well order a cam

Later and thanks for all your help, Stu

Re: She's smokin....

Heh... I once had a collapsed intake lifter on an old firebird. smoked like a mofo.

Intake stroke: pull oil in around gasket
compression stroke: push oil out around gasket
power stroke: pull oil in around gasket
exhaust stroke: dump oil straight into the exhaust

Mosquitos beware!
