I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "valve clatter" but if you abused your redline you could be getting "valve float". This is typically what happens when you push your springs past their limits. Your valves end up bouncing when they should be slamming shut and staying that way.

Does the engine also loose power at about the same RPM as the noise starts or is it not as strong as it used to be?

try a different MAF sensor. My car did the same thing, never set the SES light but I swapped MAF sensor with another car of mine and it went away. something in mine was bad just not bad enough to set light.

its worth a try anyway, otherwise bent pushrods are common.

Valve clatter in upper rpm's only ????????????

Just wondering if anybody might know what sounds to me like valve clatter in higher rpm's. I thought it might have been bad gas so I ran it down low and filled it back up with premium as usual "but at a different place" This is a 2002 Z with no computer tuning and all I have on the car right now is a lid and underdrive pulley. Well if anyone has any thoughts I am definately interested in hearing them. Thanks MIKE
