Car won't start after head and cam install.

Ok my car has been down for over a year now. I installed new heads, cam, intake, tranny, etc. Went to fire it up today and it won't start. Sometimes it backfires out the exhaust a little and it has a bubbling sound to it when you press on the gas and crank it. I have plenty of fuel pressure, checked the crank sensor, all the fuses, made sure everything was plugged in. Any suggestions on what it could be?

If the injectors sat, they might be gummed up or contaminated fuel.

Flush and use new gas.

I expect you used new plugs.

Did it sit outside or inside for a year?

02Z28 Feb 24, 2007 04:49 PM

The gas and plugs are new. The injectors are used 42lb/hr green tops. When I first started cranking on it, it actually fouled the first set of plugs so would you think the injectors are still gummed up or bad?

When we were just cranking on the motor a buddy mention that it sounded like it was popping in the intake. What would cause that?

ChucksZ06 Feb 24, 2007 07:49 PM

Sounds like your cam is not timmed correctly...are you sure you lined up the marks correctly on the cam gears? You also could be way rich with the 42lb injectors. I would guess the timeing though.

Did you do any fuel managment with the ecu after installing the bigger injectors? You could be washing your cylinders down with fuel.
You cant just shove bigger injectors in with a stock tune. You need to tune for them or your going to be dumping more fuel than it thinks it is.

My car sat for a year as well-we have plastic fuel tanks dont even worry about the gas going bad.
When i dumped in the new heads, cam, intake, stall ect ect everything in my sig... Its didnt want to start either. It would crank and bubble up and maybe pop a little. Many weeks later i find out i was sent a cam cut 180 degree's off ingnition timing :bang:
Not saying you you have a bad cam, unless its from Futral and it was sent to you about 6 months ago? Im pretty sure either way its your timing, i really hope you lined up the dots or degreed your cam.

I already check the chain too. I sent my computer to Futral and it's suppose to be tuned for the 42's, but I will double check with Allen and make sure it got tuned for them.

Sounds like the cam is off time, especially if you're getting a backfire through the intake.

sledneck687 Feb 25, 2007 11:06 AM

did you also makje sure that the grounds on the back of the drivers side head are connected? there should be the 3 wires, and 2 places to connect them.

02Z28 Feb 25, 2007 11:07 AM

Well I know the chain is dot to dot, I spent all day yesterday tearing it back apart to make sure. To me it really sound like the timing is off I hope I didn't get a bad cam that would suck to tear it back apart again!

You might of put the coil packs on wrong............Paul

Jason99T/A Feb 25, 2007 12:38 PM

Check your cam timing and make sure you aren't hanging a valve open (too long of a pushrod).

The motor has 7.600 pushrods. TEA originally sent me 7.700's not know that I have morel lifters in the motor which are longer then the stock lifters. I used a length checker to find out what size I needed. I'll probably double check that tonight though. Do you guys think I could put the stock injectors back in that the 42lb/hrs could be the problem?

heavymetals Feb 25, 2007 07:19 PM

7.6"?

Did you do a compression test?

7.600" pushrods????? You sure about that. I am definately no master at this but if your lifters are longer than stock then wouldn't that call for a shorter pushrod? I have 7.400" pushrods in mine from TSP and my MS4 has more lift and duration than your F14HL. I may be wrong but 7.600", that sounds way off the charts.

he has trickflow heads, you need to run longer pushrods with these heads

With Trick Flows and stock lifters they call for 7.700's, so I really don't think it's my pushrods. I going to double check anyways.
