Default How many 918 breaks do we have on here? Pics of MINE BROKE

Ive got a serious misfire showing on the #4cyl on atap. Ive had the 918's in the car for 2 weeks and now i have startup issues and idle probs. It will idle somewhat, but i cant really apply any gas cause the car sputters/stumbles bad.

UPDATE: pulled valve cover and ya'll tell me if this looks broke

Spring pressure check cant hurt but probably wont show a premature failure problem. I suggest magnaflux testing then maybe shot peening springs. Also Cryo-genically treating would make dramatic difference in useful life of springs. If you cant sleep at night using these springs then these options would be worth it.

A week after i put them in and Snap Now im paranoid about even flooring the car again lol, but ill get over that. Just hopefully my valve or anything else isnt shot to hell, but i wont know till i get my compressor and get the spring off monday or tuesday. Yeah things break, but its not everyday i see a 918 breaking. Its gonna be more and more also like you said since EVERYONE has them now. Yeah Ill be replacing them with a 918's cause its nothing else i can use

Had my 918 on car for probably 2000 to 3000 miles with the b1..so far so good..I heat cycled them..as for install, just put them on and also bought the pricey titanium retainers..I had 915 springs installed first but only ran my stock cam with them and they were fine after I took them out..they were in for couple thousand miles.I heard of the 915 not being good enough so I upgraded to the 918s and now we see these damn things breaking..not impressed.I plan on heads hopefully next year and likely will go to dual springs after seeing these single spring failures..some with catastrophic results..only going to be driving my car for about another 2 and half months before winter storage so I better start saving for spring for those heads. Is there any single spring out there with no failures..
I would have thought making a good spring wasn't that hard to do..maybe it is after looking at these pictures..

I've had my 918's on for about 2500 miles, the first 1100 came in the first 16 hours of their installed life. No heat-cycling here - I heard that's an old-wive's tale anyway - that they already come that way.

I've used two sets of Rev 1115's before that, and they broke about every 20-22K miles. I broke this last one in Illinois. We replaced my bent valve yesterday, and checked the installed height on that single spring. It was about 1.83", which supposedly corresponds to 120-125lbs of seat pressure.

Lst year I had a spring break, which took out my rocker arm, then broke off the valve head in my piston...but no holes in the cylinder. I guess things could get worse

I broke one with my TR224 112 LSA. But I replaced it with no further damage, 4000 miles later still runs good. $hit happens, parts break, these things happen. But as for the height install the 918's were made to be direct replacements for the stock springs at the stock height. Very few people use any type of spacers or different rockers. I know that the T/A that The Horsepower Store in the new GM High Tech Magazine uses these springs, witha cam witha +.590 lift with a 50 shot on top of a ATI. With stock interenals, so they can't be all that bad.

and like said above, they are supposed to be direct replacements so we didnt measure them or anything along those lines. All my friends with heads/cam have those and they installed them the same way i did. Mine broke, and their's havent

You can purchase a spring pressure tester from Goodson. They are very expensive though. For a 0-500 pound tester they are about 750.00 dollars. Spring pressure is very important. Open pressure with the 918 spring should be around 320-330 pounds. At the installed height it should be at 120-125 pounds.

I've put a few thousand miles and more than 60 7000RPM-drag runs, at .591 lift, on the 918's.
THESE ARE EXCELLENT SPRINGS, PEOPLE!!!
The internet is notorious for duping people into believing that the sky is falling because 5 people are wailing that they have broken, or are breaking "all the time"...leading some to think that they all must suck, when in reality, out of the hundreds or thousands of spring sets out there in the real world, running every day, only a small handful are breaking---well within the expected and normal failure rate.
"I heard of this guy" and "both me and this buddy of mine"....
It's going to happen, sure--these are high-stress parts--but it's NOT happening very often, despite the above-like statements implying that they do.
Think about it-- they are the only springs that I'm aware of that are designed EXCLUSIVELY for the LS1 engine--which means that of all the springs out there, no other was tested and produced for exactly our motor.
That alone makes me more confident in them, and my personal experience has cemented it.

Let me amend this to say that I'm not flaming you guys who have had them break on you--it sucks, and I'm sorry to hear it happened to you--I'm just pointing out that for every failure, however bad, there are hundreds of flawless sucesses, and that perspective needs to be maintained so as not to mislead people

Despite my mishap I still recommend the 918's for cam swaps. Hands down. Like said before thousand have gone out and so far I can almost count the broke spring cases on my digits to include the toes of course but that is not bad at all. I wish my Rear End could hold up like those springs. I dropped the stock rear with ET Streets at 6000 RPMS, the valve train held up awesome, the rear well, it wines now alittle. Jusat a matter of time. Ragingmotor Sports will have a new 12 Bolt waiting for me very soon

I have had my 918s w/ 772 Ti Retainers since early March '02 and no problems reving to 6800 rpm with the T1 cam. I swapped from the 941 springs w/ Ti Retainers and had run them for about 1.5 years with no problems. This includes 100+ 1/4 mile runs with the 941s.

I did one heat cycle after installing the 918s and didn't mess with the install height.

Guys dont be wary of 918's. Every so often someone gets a bad apple.

I put my TR224 in along with 918's and stock retainers. Broke in the cam and pulled out of my development. I drove about a 1/4 of a mile and beat the snot out of her.

No heat cyclin and no problems. Dropped 4 tenths and gaine 4 MPH.

918's are the poop.
