Default TR 220 cam users! > Please tell us your impressions

We hear alot from the TR-224 crowd, but very little from folks using the TR-220. Are you out there?

I am planning on a heads / cam / header / LS6 intake combo using the TR-220 (114 LSA) in my A4 Trans Am. I want to keep good low RPM throttle response along with minimal problems with tuning this A4 car, so I can except a few HP loss using the 220 cam over the 224 or bigger variety.

You folks that are using the TR-220, how about some input: Dyno numbers, track times, idle quality, throttle response, overall likes or dislikes, other mods?, etc, etc

Thanks,
Ron

You would think that cam would be similar to the T1 specs.. It should dyno about the same, but idle better.. That is what I would think...

Vince...

Its pretty close: 220/220 .561/.561 114 LSA

With the 114 LSA, I guess it would be almost the same as the B1 cam. May have slightly faster ramps though. Don't know for sure.

Here is a link to the TR220 through ORP and Hooker Headers http://home.attbi.com/~cdcastle1/idlerev.mpg

With Stock exhaust and cats http://home.attbi.com/~cdcastle1/TR220idle.mpg

Dynomax Ultra Flow muffler on both

I have GTP II heads/LS6 intake/TR220 (114)/CC918's/Hookers. The only downside is the extra valvetrain noise with the fast ramps and in my case increased oil consumption. No dyno or ET's yet. I am still working with the tuning. I can say it has plenty of pull and torque. I put the Hookers on last and they made a dramatic difference in the SOTP torque feel with the other parts. I also passed TX emissions when I had the stock exhaust/cats by a large margin. Also I never had to really enlarge the TB hole either(M6). I did notice when I went to the S2 ported TB response got even better(you can really hear it suck the air)

I gained 30 rwhp with a 220 on 114 on my setup.Idle at 800rpm and drivability is excellent.

old B1 = 286/286
new B1 = 280/280
TR220 = 270/270
from various postings of the cam cards.

So in theory the TR220 should idle better than the B1. (Less total duration, less area of overlap.) I think Batmobile's idle sounds nice and tame, even through the LT's and ORP.

I probably won't be putting a cam in until next year, but the TR220 - 114 is what I've settled on so far.

What I'm really interested in seeing is if there's any surge or roughness when cruising at 1000 to 1500 rpm (M6) with this cam. I get scared when I see people recommending gears with a 224 cam.

Here is a soundclip of a 2001 Camaro SS, that has the TR 220 114 LSA cam, along with SLP LT headers, HF cats, and a wide open Borla. http://www.ls1info.com/download.php?op=getit&lid=49 This car sounds really good with the TR 220 cam.

Anyone know the duration at .006 for the B1 and TR220?

FWIW: My impression is B1 and TR220 are pretty equal powerwise. I tend to think the TR220 would be a little harder on the valve train with slightly higher lift and a little more aggressive ramps. The TR220 might idle a tad better. Doesn't TR say the TR220 is only like 5rwhp peak under the TR224?

I'd like to see graphs over lays of a TR220 on 112 and 114, like Tony's old dyno of the B1 & T1. It would also be nice to see an over lay of B1 and Tr220 on 114.

Duration @ .006 for the Comp ground B1 is 280. The comp version has XE lobes and my cam card says .559 lift as opposed to .558 on the older Lunati grind.

I think it's a great cam - speeddemon used it in a C5 (m6) - with stock cats, stock catback (x-pipe only), and headers the cam alone gave us a 384 rwhp dyno (after tuning). This was the 112lsa version. Torque was 37x. At 900rpm idle was stock for all intents and purposes.

I had the TR 220 cam (114 LSA), and I liked it. Idle sounded stock at 900 RPM through the SLP dual-dual. I wasn't overly impressed with the power gains, though- I dynoed 345, 335 with the TR cam, Grots, Ed Wright tuning, and all the bolt-ons through 4.10 gears. My tuning was off, though- I was running lean and getting alot of KR.

My dyno numbers were 366.5 RWHP and 360RWTQ... I had O2 sensor 'issues' and was running very rich. I suspect that there's alot more there, given the proper tuning...

camss ....

"SLP LT Headers, SLP Y Pipe, Borla Cat-Back, Thunder Racing 220/114 cam"

That sounds pretty good for a car with stock heads.
I wonder if 385-390 rwhp would be realistic on a car with the same mods as "camss" [and] ported heads with LS6 intake?

Ron,

Ron, I'm still thinking numbers shoulda been higher... I had EFILive5 attached during the sessions and was throwing a P151 (?) error - O2 low voltage during WOT. Also, at WOT both O2 sensors, instead of locking high (at .89-.90) locked low (.11-.15) Very weird.

And the next day I caught myself adjusting the wrong dial on my MAFT (base instead of WOT) - there's a good chance I was doing the same thing at the dyno...

I'm thinking my setup (minus pilot error) would be good for 375-385 RWHP...

Time will tell.

Does anyone have a dyno of the TR220-112?
