First Impression of ARE's 232 Cam

Swapped out my 224/224 cam for ARE's new 232 cam. It was just put it in and fired up with no TB adjustments and the only tuning change was to raise my idle from 900 to 1000 (warm, in park) / 975 rpm (warm, in gear).

Idle:
Surprisingly good given my IAC count has jumped up to 60 (hot, in gear). I have a little surging to work out; it goes away with a blip of the throttle and didn't do it when hot.
No hiding the lope at this idle speed and a tiny bit more shake than my old cam. After I play with the IAC, I think I can get good enough for the wife.
Drive:
Died on me in reverse when trying to back up an incline, but I didn't really give it much time to learn. Most of drive time was highway, but in town it ran smooth and it didn't surge at lower speeds, so I don't need to raise my lock-up speed (~ 33mph in 3rd and 40mph in 4th).
Performance:
Yeah, it felt stronger up top, but I don't put much faith in SOTP measurements on an 11 second car. The good news is that on the WOT blasts through the 2-3 shifts I was holding an extra 100 - 200 rpm of shift extension (now at 5600 - 5700). Since the shift extension increases with torque, that is a good indicator that the cam is making more torque above 5000 rpm.

I plan to redo the Y-Pipe ( Grot POS) and then hit the wideband and see what I really have. Track times will probably occur later in the October when the Kids' soccer & baseball seasons end.

Sorry about not posting the full specs, Wade asked that I hold them back for now.

Whats the specs of the cam?

Re: First Impression of ARE's 232 Cam

Harold: What idle speed and timing are you using?

Pewter: Without the secret handshake, all I can tell you is 106<LSA<117.

It's no secret what cam patterns ARE prefers, so with a little thought given to my description of idle you can probably guess the duration & LSA, which I can neither confirm nor deny.

Idle speed is 950, and there was no difference on the dyno with timing from 26 to 28, so we brought it back down to 26, which is about right for the 100 shot. You could leave it high, if you dont plan to spray, or as long as you dont have KR. I didn't have any KR, even at high timing, and if not for the nitrous, I probably would have left it there.

I just got my convertor back in tonight, so I got to ATAP this weekend and see what all is going on. Things feel tighter, and I'm expecting close to a 10 sec run, on motor, before all is said and done. The TQ sure is there for such a run. We'll see. Probably wont hit the track until Sat.

Did you do the install yourself? Do you have LS1 Edit tuning?

Great. The specs appear to still be top secret, unless you are security cleared

I can tell you what my car put down with the cam, just to give you refrence point. 387/441 HP/TQ. That was with 12 bolt, Denny's nitrous driveshaft, TT2 rims (58 lb.s apiece with rear 335's). Also was with a slipping tranny. Track times this weekend, hopefully.

You should notice an ungodly pull from 4000 up. I sure do..

If you are thiking of nitrous, on a 100 shot, # went to: 471/555 HP/TQ.

Keep me informed of how your track times compare.

Re: First Impression of ARE's 232 Cam

Thanks, guys. 232 was bigger than I would have ever thought my go inside my car, but Wade told me they had good success with this cam and that drives "smaller" than the duration would imply.

Harold:
I have Edit. I'm using 30 degrees peak timing at WOT in the higher rpms.
I was actually thinking about the timing run at idle. I raised it over stock and was wondering ARE did with your idle timing.

Everyone is running the big cam nowadays

probably more drivable than my 232

Re: First Impression of ARE's 232 Cam

drilled my 2nd TB hole 1/32" larger to 5/32" and that seems to have greatly reduced the surging at idle. 1st hole is the stock hole.

Time for you to test out the valve reliefs and try a 236/230 110 cam

planning on cutting the reliefs a bit bigger this winter and putting something "special" in
