Default Are main caps aluminum or steel?

Are the LS1 5.7 aluminum blocks fitted with steel or aluminum main caps????

I picked up a LS1 bare block, but the seller was slow on delivering the mains. I just got them today, and they are steel. Is that right?????

The factory ones are powdered metal (steel) type. The aftermarket is typically cold rolled steel.

if you didn't disassemble it yourself make sure you get it line honed/bored before reusing

Okay cool.

I assembled my last LS1 about two years ago and could have sworn the mains were aluminum. That is why I was confused when I opened the box in the mail.

I didn't assemble it, but these are truly the mains from the engine, per my friend...who is also the guy I bought it from.

The local shop wants $400 to line bore, as I was considering tearing down a broken LS1 and using those mains for this good block when he told me that he couldn't find the caps.

Thanks!

if you arent putting the caps back in their exact places (you replace them or dont know) line bore it. 400 seems high to me for that though.. if you are sure that they are the caps for the motor, and they are ok you can risk it..

Unless you're 110% sure they are that motor's caps, better take it to a shop and line bore as mentionned.

Jeez, $400 is damn steep for a line bore job. Maybe a complete machine package, but not a damn line bore alone.
