Default Replace Oil Pump and Timing Chain with cam install?

I have been told both ways so I'm wondering which one is right?

You need to upgrade to a better chain with the new cam. Call Katech Engines. They'll hook you up. As far as the oil pump, my philosophy on that is if it ain't broke, don't fix it.(unless you have a ton of miles on your car)

In addition to the chain, I'd replace the pump with one of the blueprinted units out there. I used the Katech myself. It's cheap insurance for $110 considering the pump failures we've seen.

That doesn't match your philosophy at all. The oil pump is more likely to die than the chain.

Umm, good point. The timing chain will have to endure higher stress rates when using stronger valve springs and high lift cams. You definitely need to change that. The oil pump has no added stress. I would upgrade though, since others have recommended it. New philosophy = Upgrade.

IMO, porting and blueprinting the oil pump won't keep it from dying. Several "improved" pumps have died, some recently. On my car for example, with the stock pump, I have ~35-40psi hot idle, ~60-70 cold idle, ~60 under throttle, not too bad, IMO. I thought the '01 and up pumps were better than the 98-00s, correct? I just swapped the chain (JWISS from Katech, much beefier than stock, fwiw) when we installed my heads and cam. So far so good. It would suck to replace my stock, 2100 mile oil pump with a $110+ ported pump from someone, and have it fail anyways.

I've got a '98 and my hot idle is around 40psi with cold idle around 50-55 and heavy-WOT acceleration around 60-65. That's very nice for a '98 pump. I just bought an ARE pump for 'added insurance'. I don't need super high psi, I just want one that won't crap out on me. But so far my stock one has been real good. Hope the new one isn't the one that craps out.
