Getting timing gear off the crank snout?
Well I been searching for a while, but cant find an answer to my question. This is my first LSx build up, so bare with me.
I'm doing a cam swap and decided to upgrade the oil pump and timing chain while I was in there. I bought a Comp Cams double roller. Is there a trick to changing out the crank timing gear? Id like to do all this myself, but want it done right also. Its a GTO LS1.
Thanks for any help!

This is GM's official way. I think you can rent a generic puller tool from Autozone.

I did my LS1 recently. Just used a torch and a 3 arm pulller for removal. Then, since I had no plans to ever use the stock crank sprocket/oil pump gear, I used that as a sleeve when pounding the new sprocket and gear on. I had no access to a press tool thingy, hence the hulk smash approach. Best method; proably not.

As was mentioned you can buck the old sprocket up against the new new one to push it on. Slide the new sprocket on the crank as far as it will go. Turn the old sprocket around backwards and slide it onto the crank snout until it bucks up against the new one. Place a short 2"X4" against the outer face of the old sprocket and hit the 2by with a hammer. It doesn't take much force to drive it home. When the rear face of the new sprocket bucks up against the boss on the crank your done.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm going to have to try the claw puller method, cant find the GM type puller anywhere.
I rode in a LS2 powered 96' RX7 the other day, and needless to say Im ready to finish my cam swap and get the car on the road.
