Broke ARP head stud on Smokinhawk's car -- Ideas? Putting some new head gaskets in. Since he is running higher boost, I decided to go 80 pounds on the 3rd torque pass. First stud we hit snapped under the brutal torque of Jonathon's incredible strength ;) I was very surprised to say the least. Now gotta figure out how to get it out. Gonna try an 1/4-inch, 8mm socket as a guide in the hole. Then use a bit through the socket to drill into the stud hopefully. Then try the easy out. If I can't get it, I guess I will pull his motor and take it to the machine shop. Anyone else broke an ARP stud? Will they replace it? |
Re: Broke ARP head stud on Smokinhawk's car -- Ideas? If you have a mig welder its very easy. Start welding on the center of the stud(weld a little ball let it cool for 30 sec weld a little more ect.)until its tall enough to grab with vise grips then turn it out with the vise grips. The weld will not stick to the aluminum. |
Re: Broke ARP head stud on Smokinhawk's car -- Ideas? That is a great idea, but the stud broke off about 3 inches down into the hole. The method I talked about worked OK. Got the pilot hole started with the socket in there. Then used a larger bit to bore down a bit. Then a long 3/16" bit to bore some more. Got the easy out in and it broke right loose. I will remember that for next time though if the bolt breaks off closer to the surface. :D |
Re: Broke ARP head stud on Smokinhawk's car -- Ideas? Glad to here you got it out. I sure there was a lot of happy faces when it backed out. |
Re: Broke ARP head stud on Smokinhawk's car -- Ideas? i'd pull all the studs out and send em to arp for inspection/replacement.. thats just not right. |
