Can't figure out whats wrong....

Before I tell you the problem, let me give you a lil background on this car...

I have a '01 Camaro SS that I bought from a dealership that had been repo'ed. It now has 105k miles on it. I haven't taken the engine out yet or anything but I'm almost positive nothing has been done internally. Externally its all stock except for a pair of long tube headers that merge into a single exhaust pipe all the way to the muffler. The car never ran perfect since the moment I bought it. At first the check engine light would stay on, it would get about 13-14 mpg, and if I put the pedal to the floor or just gagged on it in town, you could hear the engine detinate a lil bit before the car would take off, and a puff of black smoke would come out of the tail pipes, leading me to think it was running rich. The engine would also sputter goin down the highway. If I unplugged the MAF it would run a little better, so i just left it unplugged. I found that the O2 sensor on the driver sider was melted to the headers so i bought a whole new O2 sensor with wiring harness and ran it completely away from the headers so that is no longer a problem. That seemed to take my car from running a 54% fuel on the drivers side bank back down to 1%. So that fixed my fuel mileage and the sputtering at high speeds. I also bought a MAF replacement and that seems to be workin well also. After doing all this my check engine light went off for a couple days but not it is back on, but it still runs ok. And if I still get mash it to the floor you can still hear it detinate a lil before it takes off. There are no more codes showin up on the computer and I can't find anything else that could be wrong with it. Any suggestions?

plugs and plug wires. Gap the plugs tighter than the recommend gap.

T-Pat Aug 15, 2007 03:22 PM

what are they recomended to be gapped at?

BadgeZ28 Aug 15, 2007 03:30 PM

I think the stock gap is .057

T-Pat Aug 15, 2007 03:43 PM

so shut them up to about what? .045?

T-Pat Aug 15, 2007 04:24 PM

i just checked the gap in my plugs and they are set at .037. is that too narrow?

Go to autozone and get it scanned for the SES light.

It is free and will tell you what is making the light come on.

thats what i thought too but when i had it done, nothing showed up

Get the code erased so the light goes off.

Then if it comes back on get it scanned, there will definitely be a code then.
