Default Cam Shoot out (Who wants to see it) 5+ cams back to back testing..

I am swaping some things around with my set up and thought it would be a great time to test some cams back to back. I'll end up keeping the cam that best fits my application. I figured it would be nice to share my findings with others. In an effort to keep things as equal/fair to each cam this is the test platform:

63 Chevy Pick up
Forged shortblock
3.905 Diamond -2cc reliefs
6.125 Eagle H-beam rods
Cady lifters
62 cc ABS Heads (Flow numbers bellow) with Crane 823 springs
.040 3.910 gaskets
SCR should come in right around 11.17
Stock LS6 intake
Ported TB
Edelbrock 1 3/4 stepped 1 7/8
3" X-pipe with Warlock mufflers
ASP pulley
8.5" 10 bolt with 3.73's
Heavy rims with a 275/50/15 (I'll try to weigh before the test)
Tune will be in SD with no MAF

Head flow info
____In__Ex
200_149_112
300_208_169
400_257_201
450_276_211
500_288_219
550_296_222
600_306_226

I will be using Harland Sharp adjustable rockers with a 7.4" push rod. Hopefully that keeps me from needing different push rods for each cam to achieve the same preload on the lifters.

Here is a list of cams I am looking to try:
Trex (in process of buying)
TR230/224 *
G5X2 *
G5X3 *
MS4 (5.3LJimmy is lending)
Custom I am putting together and will say what it is once it's tested (whether it is a dog or rocks)

Cams with the * I am looking for. Either I can buy it from you or if you are willing to lend it, that would be awesome (not sure how to work shipping though, maybe I could cover shipping one way). If you have another cam you would like to through in the mix, please pm me, but you have to provide the cam, shipping both ways. I will keep track of who it comes from via an excel sheet and get it back to you once the test's are done.

I am going to be unbiased, show all dyno's both by themselves and overlaid.

So if you have suggestions that I can accomodate in this test, please give your input. If I can make it happen I will.

NOV. 3 is the day I am targeting for the shoot out

Shaun

I have an MS4 on a 111LSA you can borrow. Should be a really interesting test! I also have a tr230, but it's in my brothers car at the moment. We are probably gonna pull his engine soon due to low compression. What kind of time frame are you looking at?

I'm hoping to have everything in 2-3 weeks and do the test mid October?

I'm also trying to get a buddy who has a internally stock bolt on M6 to buy some valve springs and do the test with his car as well.

When do you think your brother will be pulling the motor? That would be 2 cams with one stone.

It's hard to say. I'm putting all my energy to getting my car ready for the LSX shootout. I have a brand new TR230 that I bought for my truck, but I'd rather be the first person to use it. On the other hand I'd really like to see this test completed, so I may sacrifice that one for the test too. If no one else steps up with one or my brothers is not available in time.

So LA to CA via UPS ground is probably 5 days. I'm in Cancun going home from my honeymoon. Over the next few days I'll identify a weekend that my wife works and can do the test. Then we can figure out when you should ship. If someone else has a 230/224 then it won't be an issue at all. I do appreciate the willingness to lend the cams for testing.

No problem. I just talked to my brother and we're gonna try to get his engine out next Saturday. PM me when you find out the test date.

Looking forward to this thread as I will be looking to buy a cam around the same time this test will be completed, I think I've finally decided on the TRak cam but will definitely be looking to this thread for some comparison...subscribed

I guess the concept sort of confuses me a bit You have a fairly heavy vehicle (a Truck) that you say you want to use as a tow vehicle and it has a stock converter and a 4L80E, and you are wating to test big "peaky" cams that are probably best suited for lighter vehicles with high RPM operation in mind. I don't see any of the cams listed that I think would be a good "tow" cam.

I guess if it were me and i wanted to build a tow rig I'd limit my duration a bit more than most of the cams you have listed.

Like a 216/220 or something of that nature.

I like the idea of a cam shootout, but I think the testing would be better served behind a 6 speed to control variation. Obviously the best way to run a test is to run it on a real dyno. But barring that, I think a 6 speed would be the best test

J-rod,

The application of my truck has shifted. Since my wife and I have bought a TBSS and most my towing will be with in 150 miles from home, I will be using that to tow with (AC, load leveling, leather ect). The 223/228 108/108 that was in it was a nice cam IMO for the original goal with the stock LS6 heads. It was making 320rwtq at 3k rpm through a 4L80E and carried that TQ to 5,800. Useable HP with the old set up was decent too making 324rwhp at 4,950 peaking at 6,100 354rwhp, carring to 6,800 with 326rwhp.

The combo now has a 3,200 stall, it will be getting 4.10's with a 28" tall 335 radial. I'm looking for a cam that has decent TQ to get the truck out of the hole but carries power to a 7k shift point and will move the 4,200 pile to a mid/low 12 NA. If I loose 5-10rwhp at peak but pick up TQ/HP from 3,200 up, I will be happy. The 80E comes in to second at 5,000 rpm with a 7k 1st gear shift (with the old verter). I'm not looking for a max effort cam but close (then again, maybe I am)..

Since I have the time and the combo is changing, why not through 5-6 cams at it, see what one has the best overall performance and go with it. It's now become a hobby truck not so much a functional truck. I hope that makes a little more sense.

As far as testing with a M6 car, I agree, I am trying to line up a buddies right now.

TTT..

Cams I have are:
TREX
230/234 114/114 (not sure on lobes as it's a D Elgin Cam)
MS4 111 (5.3LJimmy is lending)
XER 236/242 on a 110/110

Any one else want to add some of the other cams to the test? Again, I'll give you the cam back or buy it from you.

Still looking for:
TR230/224
G5X2
G5X3
G5X4

Well I have the MS4 coming on loan, trying to find a G5X3. If someone wants to step up and offer the others, we might be able to work something out. However, I don't want to do more than 6 swaps. So once the cams are offered up, I will put up a poll and let the users vote on 3 cams to see what their choice is. (This would more than likely exclude the TREX, my custom and the MS4 from the poll as I am planing on testing them anyway).

LMAO! Planning a cam shootout while still on your honeymoon. This is one of the many reasons I love this forum

I decided to buy a version of performance trends software to play with some cams in it and see how they react. I loaded my set up based on my head flow, compression, headers ect and started playing with some cams. It's got me thinking some more. Here are some results based on the program.

Sorry the colors aren't that clear..

This is the MS4 vs the Trex. It's like someone drew a line right over the other. They were with in 1-2 hp/tq pretty much the whole way.

1k-7,300 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/ms...ex_1000rpm.JPG
3200-7,250 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/ms...ex_3200rpm.JPG

I found a cam profile I really like which is a LSK 236 / XFI 248 106/107. Here I compare it against the MS4, Trex and Patricks TQ cam

Patricks TQ cam in Red and Light Blue / 236/248 in Green and DK Blue
1k-7,300 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...10_1000rpm.JPG
3200-7,250 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...10_3200rpm.JPG

MS4 in Red and Light Blue / 236/248 in Green and DK Blue
1k-7,300 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...s4_1000rpm.JPG
3200-7,250 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...s4_3200rpm.JPG

TREX in Red and Light Blue / 236/248 in Green and DK Blue
1k-7,300 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...ex_1000rpm.JPG
3200-7,250 http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/23...ex_3200rpm.JPG

Now given this is a simulator, I wanted to test it's accuracy against my old set up. So I loaded info from the stock LS6 heads, .053 gaskets and cam:
Perftrends http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/Ol...perftrends.JPG
Dynojet http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/Old_set_up_dyno.JPG
Excel comparison http://73-ls1.com/misc/Perftrends/Analyzer_vs_Dyno.xls

It's not perfect, but it's pretty close.

Since I am going with a 3,200 stall, I'm not too concerned about power bellow that. This will probably help me narrow down the cam tests and rule smaller cams out. The program shows that the LS1 tends to like a IVC point of 44-45 like Patrick says and a EVO point of 53-56.

What's interesting though is with a stock longblock and just headers, the TREX beats my custom out..
