Question PEOPLE WITH 228R AND AFR's

can someone please post what they did to maximize this cam using AFR heads, I am about to buy them tomorrow and need to know what I should do to them for optimal performance.
the Cam is a 228R from TSP. other mods are in my signature. Basically the block has forged pistons and rods.
please be specific as possible. the engine is at the machine shop right now waiting for the heads...
thanks in advance.
David

ps. I am also ordering a powerbond pulley.

Shoot for at least an 11.0:1 static compression ratio. On 93 octane, you can actually run up to 12.0:1 if you want. Consider having the AFRs milled to give you a 62cc combustion chamber (.024" mill) and run a .040" head gasket. This will give you around 11.3:1 SCR. If you must run the stock MLS gasket, then consider milling the heads down to 61cc (.030" mill). This will give you an 11.07:1 SCR.

Patrick, I already have a set of the stock gm 6.0 gaskets, does that mean that I will have to mill the heads 0.030"? whill I have plenty of room for the PV to be safe? I dont want to go and buy a whole new set up, I just want to tweak this setup for best performance. The patriots were unmilled and they performed OK at 400 rwhp/400 rwtq, SQR did the tuning.
what numbers should I expect with this additions? the cam will be degreed as well.
should I ask for the cam to be installed in a certain way as far as degrees are concerned?
thanks for all your help and the rapid response.

At 61cc with the MLS gaskets, you will still have adequate P to V clearance running the 228R cam. I can't stress how important the milling is for top performance.

Edit, I just noticed your signature said FORGED shortblock. I would expect that you have 2cc valve reliefs cut in your pistons already. If that's the case, then you will need to mill even further to get those 2cc back.

ok patrick, What I am going to do is wait, I do have the 2cc valve reliefs. what I am going to do is order the AFR's unmilled and then have the machine shop do the milling on the heads once we know how far the pistons stick out and all the other pertinent information. can I PM you if I have anymore questions for this setup?
thanks

patrick:

Why is the milling more important than the placeent of the ivc??

Is there an advantage to gaining compression by one or the other??

No additonal squish is gained, so why is milling more beneficial?

why 6.0 gaskets? would there be issues with the bore size?

Ive had the 228R on a 114 in the car for about a year. I have all the bolt ons.
I milled my AFR heads .020 off and use stock GM gaskets to be just under 11:01 compression. Im actually at 10.85:01. I did not want to be over 11:01 in case I moved to a hot area with 91 Oct.

I actually put down about 10 RWHP more than a friend of mine with same year vette, same cam but on a 112, and his heads milled to 59CC. When we used the same dyno on the same day about 20 minutes apart.

He just bolted on a FAST 90/90 and today we jumped on our car side by side, and he was pulling away from me. I have a 90/90 in the garage waiting to go on.

David, nothing against Patrick here but the guys at the machine shop will know what to do with it. Ask them, thats what you are paying for. Their expertise bro.
