853's on 01+

Ok, I know the difference in years, 5.3, 5.7, LS6, 241, 243, 806, 853, etc. My question is what will work where because of the notch in the older 853 castings they have to either be filled and milled or an older graphite gasket in order to work on a 01+? Is this correct?

I have an 01 and can get a good deal on some worked 853's, not going for every last hp all I would have to do is get the old style gasket? I am pretty sure I have seen alot of the older style LS1's get the newer castings with no problem, but the other way around creates this issue? Thanks guys

I'm using 862 (5.3l) heads that have the same notch, with Cometic MLS gaskets, no problems.

I know the popular rumor is that the notched heads require the graphite gaskets, but the guy I bought my heads from had also used them with with both GM and Cometic MLS gaskets, and he had no leakage either.

I wonder if the MLS gaskets weren't redesigned somewhere along the line to to address this compatibility issue.

Thanks, that was what i thought. I wonder to if they have adopted some new gaskets. Either way your living proof is good enough for me. No leakage is and more power is good :burn:
