Default budget heads+FAST 90/90...or...TFS or AFR heads

working on a budget...which do you think would be the better option?

going with something like a budget set of heads, maybe the Dart 225s or some 2.5 5.3L heads for a cost of aprox $1500, and then throwing a FAST 90/90 on top

or

putting $2500 into a set of top shelf TFS 215s or AFR 225s?

is it safe to estimate that the FAST would make up the difference in the flow characteristics of the cheaper heads to make up the power difference?

oh and i already have the rockers needed to run the TFS...so that aspect of the $$ equation is mute

in a way i'm leaning towards the budget/FAST combo since i'd like to upgrade to a 383 in the future (years...maybe 3-5). and the FAST will be better suited for that setup.

I've seen a FAST 90 make 35 HP difference on a set of PRC heads over LS6 intake.

I'd go budget w/ FAST, that's me. I'm sure others will say different.

I would make the head investment up front myself.

i would deff get the better heads..... you can always upgrade the intake down the rd.....a nice set of trick flows will make amazing power with the right cam....

well the cam is staying the same....233/233 .589 112

and upgrading the intake later on would require about 2 yrs of saving money....which would push the possiblity of a stroker 5+yrs away or more

i would think the cheaper head+FAST would still make more power than a set of high dollar heads alone

if you are on a budget, the fast 90/90+budget heads are the best choice for ya. youll get a head that is at least 70-80% of the TFS performance. and with even a set of budget heads the stock intake and TB is a restriction to the motor. having one or two kicka** parts wont make up lost power for not having the other parts on there to let em breathe and do their job. a well-rounded cheaper package will make more power than a high dollar motor that has the capability to flow 320 cfm through the heads but doesnt have the intake, tb, headers and exhaust to allow it.

just my :twocents:

I vote a set of $1500 heads + FAST 90/90 over a set of $2500 heads and still being limited to the LS6 intake. If upgrading to the FAST at a later time is in the picture, i might rethink things though..

I had a set of AFR on my old LT4 built motor and last week I seen my first set of TFS on a 2007 Vette and I was real impressed with them. The AFR may have inproved but I didnt have that much luck out of them. Car made 486hp and 46?tq and the car only had a little over 3000 miles on it. Good Luck on the decision.

I would buy the trick flow heads and then later on you can add the fast 90/90 setup, after you saved up some more money.

i would buy the top quality heads. buy the afrs if you dont have the budget for the rockers. either the afrs or trickflows are going to be great. after you save up some more money then get a fast 90/90. you will have a better set of heads when you go to a stroker motor also.

If it were ME i would go with AFR 205's!...even for the future 383, because they are gonna make some KILLER TORQUE in the future when you upgrade to that stroker! You will probably see any horsepower drop off between 225's and 205's but for the torque gain you will get, it's worth it IMO. Heck, you might see a gain in hp also...lol! i personally wouldn't start looking at 225's until i hit the 400ci+ area JMPO. A lot of times you will see some pretty good deals on used FAST intakes in the For Sale section also.

Since money is tight for you, and getting AFR heads and saving for a FAST later will set you back about 5 years on your stroker project...i would recommend that you get the $1500 heads 2.5 5.3's and the FAST. This head and intake combo is gonna make killer Power and Torque in the future when you upgrade to that 383 also!

Good luck Bro!,
Dre

To save money down the road spend it now instead of having to do it later.

"buy the afrs if you dont have the budget for the rockers"

you mis-read....i ALREADY have the rockers. put those on before the cam (couldn't pass on the deal).

as for the 205s on the stroker...i've heard several people say they are a restriction. granted they make GREAT torque...but the hp suffers. i think if i'm gonna go top of th line heads...it will be the TFS. which will be a nice compromise between power now, but not too big...and power later, but not a restriction.

i still am leaning towards the budget + FAST....it just makes more sense. especially when i consider how LONG it may take me to save up for the stroker (assuming no meltdowns before hand).
