Timing Chain Slack Here's my chain after 25,000. Looks like whoever had this before never changed the oil! http://www.circuitflex.com/ChainSlack.jpg Here's a view from the front. With the Sebring apart it makes this job cake! http://www.circuitflex.com/FrontView.jpg  |
Re: Timing Chain Slack that' slack is fine that's what you are supposed to have on the stock chain....like 1/2 inch to 3/4 of chain slack.... |
Re: Timing Chain Slack Maybe accorcing to GM, but I dont think its right, so I'll go aftermarket and repair what GM did wrong. Dale |
Re: Timing Chain Slack Even the Jwiss has slack like that! Go with the SPDC double. It's nice and tight. |
Re: Timing Chain Slack Got my SPDC last week, putting it in tonight |

Re: Timing Chain Slack both are pretty much the same but the $85 one has a bearing on the back of it. JR |
Re: Timing Chain Slack I just got my Rollmaster Double roller from Scoggin-Dickey and it is one nice looking piece. Can't wait to get it in the TA. - Pat |
Re: Timing Chain Slack I would like to see the difference between the two ...the stock and the double roller...to see how substantially different they are... |
Re: Timing Chain Slack I too noticed what I thought to be too much timing chain slack in my "pre-owned"(is that the term they use nowadays?)LS1. To me, this means inaccurate timing during initial acceleration, and when feathering the gas pedal. |
Re: Timing Chain Slack Well I got the Rollmaster installed tonight. The bearing on the back fits up against the cam holder. There is no slack in the chain, and no detectable cam walk. These parts fit beautifully. Here's a pic. http://www.circuitflex.com/Rollmaster.jpg |
Re: Timing Chain Slack The timing chain slack isnt that big of a deal guys, when you start accelerating its going to be nice and tight on the side thats pulling the gear so it really doesn't matter. The extra slack is probably there because the crank snout may wobble a little at certain RPMS and rather than try to stretch the chain and snap it, the slack just eats it up. I'm not an automotive engineer tho so take that with a grain of salt. |
Re: Timing Chain Slack I've been told that because the block is aluminum and not iron that it will stretch more with the heat and the chain was left like that to allow for the expansion of the block.... |

Re: Timing Chain Slack That bit of slack on the "take up" side of the chain was making me think about the whiplash effect. I'm sure there's some built in engineering here, but would feel safer with the SDPC setup. Chain slack reminds me of my Fix Or Repair(twice)Daily with the nylon timing gears which lost a couple of teeth one day. Of course, this won't happen with the iron geared LS1. :) |
