Default lets play guess the piece of metal in my oil

I found this piece of metal in my stuck to the magnet on my drain plug today when I changed my oil

a little history on the car it is a 2002 b4c a4 with a 102 thousand miles with 92 thousand of that as a Florida highway patrol car and third gears been slipping pretty bad so iv been revving it pretty high in second a lot lately my guess is that its part of a thrust bearing but im not sure any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

Might be off a piston. But I could be wrong.

Not an expert here. Might be part of the seat under the valve spring. Mine had more of a light brown color from oil, not black like that.

I'm definately thinking something in the valvetrain, pull the valve covers and take a looksie.

thanks for the replies everyone I didn't think about the valve train but that would make sense iv been revving the **** out of it lately looks like I may be pulling the valve covers on Monday any body else have any ideas

Looks like either a valve seat or retainer piece. Nothing else I can think of would be that shape & thickness.

i was also thinking retainer, but you would have noticed something wrong by now if it was that...+1 for seat

Looks like it could be from the bearing retainer on a rocker arm trunion. Look for little needle bearings too.

i forgot to add I also cut the oil filter open and it was clean no metal shavings or pieces

i have a problem with this coming from the top end (heads) and that is how can it get in the oil pan unless there is more damage. it is too large to make it down a passage or galley, and if it is a retainer you would already hear it in the valve train. there should be more item in the oil pan, pull it. i will admit it looks like a retainer. if so remove the valve cover and inspect each. better yet take it to a shop.
