Default 5.3l heads vs 243 heads

as far as how these heads affect compression, flow, ect... what are the major differences on an ls1? its a bolton cam car running a wet 125 shot. if i want to do heads the cheap way (basically, get some take-offs from either an ls6 or a truck) which should i go with?

243 castings are the best castings GM produced for LS1 motors. Most aftermarket heads are based off this design. Get 243's and leave 5.3 heads alone.

Depends on what you want. The 243 will outflow the heads stock to stock. But you'll also raise your compression with the 5.3's & nitrous loves compression. To tell people to leave a 5.3 head alone is stupidity.

I absolutely love my worked over 5.3 heads. They flow very well & were port/polished by Bo White. I also had them milled .018" to bump my compression up a little more with my little 224 cam. I have had zero issues from them & I can feel the torque difference all through the powerband.

If you want top end power go with the 243 for better flow up high. If you want good grunt from stoplight to stoplight then go 5.3's. Your gonna spray anyway, so I would say the 5.3 head would be a better choice in your case.

thanks, this is what i wanted to know

but what about stock 5.3 heads? im looking for relatively inexpensive. without porting, are the 5.3's worth my time?

Stock for stock a ls6 head will walk the 5.3's all over the place...

The stock LS6 are gonna outperform the stock 5.3's. The intake valve is 1.89" on the 5.3 versus the 2.0" intake on the LS6. The LS6 also have better flow then the 5.3, which flow almost identical to the stock LS1's. You can get LS6 heads unported from Patriot for something like $450. If your gonna go with a set of unported heads that's your best bet. Personally I would save up a bit more and purchase a good set of ported heads for $1000. It's not worth the hassle of swapping a stock head for a stock head IMO.

I agree with the above. If you just can't get ported heads; get the stock 243s. If you can wait a while and save for some ported heads, then get ported 5.3s with 2.02/1.60 valves.
