Default H/C install. Chain down crank pulley?

I'm doin a heads and cam swap on an a4 ta. I'm by myself so I dont have anyone to do the flywheel holding method. I was wondering what anyone thought of putting a chain through the crank pulley and chaining it the sway bar or something to hold it. Anyone ever tried this or have any ideas for a one man operation? I thought i've read somewhere of someone doing this but I couldnt find it. Thanks

Sounds like that will cause more problems then it will solve. Buy the flywheel tool, its cheap and you won't create more problems using it.

Well I went out there and this guys car doesnt have a front sway bar for some reason If I can get a buddy out here just drop the starter and use a screwdriver. Right? I've done a couple of h/c installs but this is the first auto. Usaully just put it in gear. I wish I had time to get the tool but I needa get this car out this weekend.

I've been using a chain wrench(plumbing dept at Sears) for years. This makes it a one man operation. You can buck the wrench handle on the concrete floor or a frame member.

Flip the chain wrench 180 degrees.

Easiest way, if the heads are on, is to remove a spark plug and push in a short length of rope, leaving enough hanging out to grab onto. When the engine turns, the rope keeps it from rotating any further once the piston starts to compress the rope. I used this method and it worked flawless.

iv seen it done like this before just don't try and hold the breaker bar I did mine last night it was already on the stand so i managed to stick a pry bar through the balancer onto the bottom of timing chain cover to hold it still

Thats how I got it back on. Put it in the oven and then put it on and slid a long extension threw the balancer and wedged it against the kmemeber/skid plate and torqued it on down
