Default LS2 Heads on LS1 (WHAT GASKET?!?)

Okay, I know this is a really dumb question, but I have to ask before I start making this attempt. I have some LS2 heads that I want to put onto my LS1 at the same time I do a cam swap. The car is a '98 Camaro, so am I to use the 97-01 style head gasket (GMPN 12498543) or do I use the LS2 gasket that my heads came with (GMPN 12589227)? I'm guessing I need the LS1, but want to be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys.

You should be able to swap to the 2001+ Z06 MLS head gasket.

I'm currently in the process of doing a heads/cam swap on my 98 vette. I'm installing Dart Pro1s which have a rather wide combustion chamber. As a result I can't really run LS1 type gaskets but rather need a bigger bore gasket like the LS2 gasket, which is what I'm using. You should probably use an LS2 gasket as well. IM vettenuts, he's pretty wise about these sorts of things.

To keep compression as high as possible, you would be best served by using the 5.7L MLS head gasket. GM Part number 12589226. These have a 3.930" bore diameter, .053" thick. If you wanted to raise compression more, you could go with a Cometic MLS 3.905" bore, .040" thick. The Cometic MLS are much more expensive than the stock GM MLS.

So using the gaskets I already have that came with the heads (LS2) will or will not work? To Aaron (405HP_Z06), I read a post you made here:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....99&postcount=7

that stated my gasket part number (12589227) would work with 225CC heads on a stock bore and stock stroke LS1... but you recommend I run the 12589226 instead? Basically I'm just curious if I need to spend more money to buy another set of gaskets, or if the ones I have will work. I plan to run the heads on a new build down the road, but prepping the block for that build is going to cost a hefty amount of change, and I figured I'd put the cam and heads on what I have now and just go have fun for a little while until I can afford prepping the other block I have. Make sense? Thanks for everybody's response. I hope to get moving on this project this week, so hopefully more people will chime in. Thanks again.

Run either 5.7 GM MLS gaskets or the 0.040" cometics that 405HP_Z06 recomended. The LS2 heads are either 243/799 castings that have the same combustion chamber as the 243's installed on the LS6 engine.

The LS2 head gasket will work, but have a larger bore diameter which slightly lowers compression. If you already have them, then use them.
