Default The rear of the oil pan bolts

The long oil pan bolt has managed to strip out. What can i do to get that long bolt tight without removing the oil pan? (the 2 in the rear)

Take the transmission out and tighten them from the back side

NO! I am refering to the 2 long bolts that you can see on the bottom of the oil pan in the rear. One of them is stripped out and i can't get to the threads to re-tap the threads.

dont put a bigger bolt in it w/o drilling and tapping. it will bust your block. especially if its alum. just put a couple of rounds of teflon tape and get it snug. im talking snug as in a nut driver. not a ratchet

Its not in the block, those two long bolts are in the rear cover.

Yes, just like the front timing cover but this one is on the rear of the block behind the flexplate/flywheel. Those two long bolts you are talking about thread into that cover and not the block

Yes, its the rear cover that has the rear seal in it. You can Take a old 1/4" drive extension and weld the tap to it to reach, Ive don't it and it works,But some extension are thicker than others, Or weld a 1/4" rod and weld a (T) at the end for a handle. I would try this before removing the oil pan

You are only suppsoed to tighten those 2 bolts to 9 ft-lbs (basically hand tight) So be careful next time. Yank the tranny and buy a used rear cover in the parts forum.

That's great to here! I'm getting there (i only came about 6 inches off the ground friday night and still spinning some. If i bust the pan open from a wheel stand then i think i will have an excuse to replace the rear cover.

thanks,

well to replace the rear cover you have to take the engine out. or completetly take the trans. out. you can tap it w/ it in the car easily.

If you can get a tap and rethread it that is the simplest way to go, although it only takes an hour or so to pull the trans and get the rear cover off. Your choice.
