LSX 454 Crate Top End
I am looking into this 454 LSX crate engine. I cant seem to find any posts about anyone who has bought it and reworked the heads and cam to further the power.
Im looking for 675-700hp with mild street manners?
I was thinking a fast intake and t/b, ported heads and a matched cam based on the flow numbers.
Im pretty new to this so fire away some thoughts.

if i was seriously looking for a LSx block engine build. i would contact HKE in houston tx. they are known for building some killer LSx block based engines.
there are others im sure. but HKE is who i would go to
it will prolly be same price range as crate. but with better matched parts

I think everyone is getting hung up on thinking they can build this engine for less and you can not. It is going to be hard to find anyone who has modded this engine due to that fact.
If it were me I and I wanted the little extra I would send the heads to Richard at WCCH and get them ported. Search lsxls7 heads here and you will see the finished product. Mine are thier right now and Richard will give you all the info you ever wanted to know. I would also throw on a single plane intake like a super vic or if it is in the budget a Performance Induction intake with a 4500 throttle body. I think these 2 upgrades would put the engine in the 700 range.
There is a article in the new gmhightech mag that shows a 451 720hp build if you really want some better specs.
I still say for a everyday driver this is the best engine for the money.

I'd recommend checking out Mast Motorsports, which is one of the very few aftermarket engine shops with real OEM-level engineering and testing capabilities in-house. They make a 454 LSx-based engine, with their own CNC LS7-style heads, that comes in at 710 HP:
http://www.mastmotorsports.com/2010/...Engines&id=157
Price is in the 16-17K neighborhood, but that includes pretty much everything, including their own DBW ECM.

So for someone building a budget 370 (LQ9) with plans of going 454 eventually, would you recommend putting the LSx/LS7 heads on the 370? Would save money in the long run being able to re-use the top end when the time comes for the 454, I'd only have to buy the shortblock.

Still waiting for the shop to get everything bolted up and installed. But hoping to get it back in a week or two.
Will overlay before and after dyno's

Actually it is completely streetable, tuned for pump gas. What matters for pump gas use is maximum cylinder pressure, which is a function of both static compression ratio and cam timing (the intake valve closing point). 12 to 1 wouldn't work with a cam that has early IVC, like the Katech Torquer, but the cam in that Mast motor is a good 15+ degrees later on IVC.
