Default Clutch releases, but drags when pressed further.

I'm installing a T56 to an LS1. The clutch releases for only a about a half inch of travel. Then when pressed further, the clutch begins to drag again. What could cause this? A bad pressure plate?

Overtraveling the clutch spring. Install a clutch stop or use a smaller bore diameter MC to limit bearing travel.

What clutch are you using?

Thanks Andrew. I thought about installing a clutch stop but there was only a small spot where it would actually release. On the test drive it was still reading too much. The master is already pretty small: 3/4 bore by 1.1 inch stroke. The clutch kit came from the previous owner so I don't know the part number but when I looked on O'Reilly's website, it looked different than what I actually had. Also this is an auto to manual conversion and its in a 76 corvette stingray.
So I probably will purchase the new clutch kit. The engine is out of a 99 Camaro.

What method did you use to come to your initial diagnosis?

Andrew
