Do L-76's have a special starter?

I called Powemaster directly to get a part number, they sent a SBC starter. Apparently when I said, "Pontiac G8 L-76" they plugged in only the "L-76" part.

My previous searching gave mixed info on whether these aluminum 6.0's have a starter different than a standard LS. This motor is in a '69 Chevelle with long tubes, so I wanted an adjustable, small, reducted starter to insure clearance.

Can anyone give me definitive answers? Thanks!

No definitive answer here but I do know LS1 starters are slightly different than LS3 starters. I tried a CVR Protorque starter on my LSx build but no matter how I clocked it, it wouldn't clear the headers in my '66 Chevelle. I still have it if you're interested. What worked for me was just an OEM-style LS1 starter. I had to use an LS1 starter because the early Quicktime bell-housings (for LS to Tremec Magnum) didn't fit with the LS3 starter. Later Quicktime bell-housings have an oval opening for the starter so either starter should fit.

Oh crap, I guess I need to double check my bell housing. I was more worried about proper gear lash. These are LS Swap headers from Holley (Blackheart) designed specifically for the Chevelle. But I also have the 1.5" forward motor mounts also from Holley. So I have less K-member clearance.

You might want to call Holley about which starter would best fit with their headers. My headers are 1 7/8" Hedman, sourced from Muscle Rods along with their engine mount kit. I did my swap long before Holley developed their parts, I'd use Holley parts if I was doing this today. Those Hedman headers didn't clear the oil filter, either, so I had to bend them for additional clearance. On the starter side, it was just easier for me to use a different starter. Both the LS1 and LS3 starters I used had the correct gear lash, just a small difference in mounting location. The CVR starter would hve no issue with the original bell housing due to it not having that "nose" that goes into the bell housing. I only learned of the difference between the starters after talking with Ross McCombs (who designed the Quicktime bell housings...) at PRI one year and he had just learned of that difference.

Used the Jegs LS mini starter on everything from an LSX block to a G8 L76, also clears aftermarket bellhousings unlike the OEM starter.

Awesome, thanks everyone!

The Rep from the manufacturer just gave me a part number for the mounting block, "9409-09". So I can just buy that and swap it instead of sending the starter back in for the swap.

At $65 for the part, much of the shipping would pay for it, lol.
