UPDATED- L92/L76/LS3 Engine Into 99-02 F-Body The L92/L76 Truck exhaust manifolds, water pump, balancer, accessory drive, oil pan, or intake assembly will not work in an f-car. You will need: *Replace L92 truck intake with L76 car intake *LS2/LS3/L76 fuel rail (they're the same) *MAP sensor from your LS1 (If you're using LS3 intake and MAP-you'll need Katech LS3 MAP adapter) *40# L76/LS3/LS7 injectors -New balancer bolt -Cam Gear Bolts -12596023 Early LS2 1x Timing cover w/cam sensor-Supposedly later style 4x will work *12588670 LS2/LS3 Black Timing Chain Tensioner *2001 and Newer LS1/LS6/LS2/LS3 Standard Volume Oil Pump (The L92 one is High Volume, I don't recommend it with your smaller LS1 oil pan) -If you use the taller EV1 Injectors (LS1 style) you'll need a spacer kit from Katech, if you use the LS7 style injectors (shorter) you'll need the injector harness adapters from Ford Racing, Caspers, or Racetronix -90mm Cable style throttle body -SLP throttle cable bracket (unless you get holley 90mm TB) -Your Throttle Position Sensor and IAC Motor from your LS1 TB -Pull the crank and replace the 58x reluctor wheel for a 24x reluctor wheel pn 12559353 (go ahead and order some new rod bolts or upgrade to Katech ones and new rod/main bearings) -24x Crank sensor from your LS1 -12576407 Early LS2 2x cam sprocket (your timing chain and crank sprocket are the same as the LS2 which is plenty stout enough) *LS2/LS3 Valley Cover *12610046 LS3 MLS Head Gasket (2 needed) *12499225 Lifter Kit Set of 16 LS2/LS3/LS7 Lifters *17800568 TTY Cylinder Head Bolt Kit 04-UP Shorter Style (Does 1 Head) *17803305 Lifter Guide Kit Includes (4x) 12595365 LS2 lifter guides and (4x) bolts -12557752 Oil Pickup Tube Seal -12580627 Oil Pan Gasket -12560696 Valve Cover Gasket (2 needed) -12574293 Rear Cover Gasket -Cam Kit w/ Compatible valvesprings/retainers. -Good time for Upgraded HD pushrods also. -Knock sensors from your LS1 -Drill & Tap block 10mm x 1.5 for knock sensors same as LS2 swap -Knock sensor extension harness (katech or racetronix) -MAP sensor extension harness (katech or racetronix) -Cam sensor extension harness (katech or racetronix) -Oil pan, windage tray, and pickup tube from your LS1 -Dipstick and tube from your LS1 -Balancer from your LS1 -Front engine accessories and brackets from your LS1 -Water pump from your LS1 -New water pump gaskets (if your l92 ones are bad...they're supposedly re-useable) -Good time for new motor mounts while your there -Reprogram PCM * Denotes items not needed in LS3 swap or if your L92/L76 Doesn't have Active Fuel Management AFM LS3's do not have the VVT cam phaser or Active Fuel Management yet. They do however use a single bolt cam and timing gear which is 4x. Therefore a cam change is required to make them work with your 1x/24x engine controls. Like late 06 and 07 LS2's they use the 58x reluctor wheel so you will have to pull the crank to change to the LS1 style 24x reluctor. Lingenfelter now offers a plug and play electronic signal converter box which allows the 58x/4x timing sensors to work with your 24x/1x ls1 computer. Well worth the cost to avoid the hassle of having to pull the crank and change the reluctor wheel. Here's a link to it on their store: http://www.lingenfelter.com/store/l460065397.html AFAIK...All L92's come with the VVT (cam phaser), Some L92 and L76 motors also have the AFM (Active Fuel Management which cuts out 4 cylinders during part throttle/light load cruising)...mine did anyways. When you pull the intake off, look at the valley cover. If it's flat...you've got the regular LS2, LS3, LS7 lifters and trays. If it's got a raised pattern that looks like a maze...it means you have one with AFM and you need to swap the valley cover,lifters, and lifter trays for the regular LS2/LS3 lifters, guides, and valley cover. VVT cannot be controlled by your LS1 ECM. If you wish to keep the VVT cam phaser, you will need to get the M-90 ECM and Harness Kit from Mast Motorsports. They also sell a bigger VVT cam. You may also be able to retrofit a factory harness and ECM from a wrecked vehicle that had it...but I can only imagine how involved that would be. Good Luck! |
98 F-Bodies used different style fuel system. I'm not sure what rails would have to be used to make this work in 98 F-bodies. It would be the same as required to swap LS2 into a 98 F-car. |
Remember aside from the Active Fuel Management...This is basically the same swap as a late 06 or 07 LS2 into an F-Body. |

The LS3 MAP adapter is still in testing by katech. I just talked to Jason and he said to call him next week to get results of testing. It's the only thing stopping my swap. |
Thats some really good information. Any estimate on the total cost of all those parts necessary (fuel rails, gaskets, etc etc) to swap an L92 long block into an '02 F-body? I'm guessing there's not a conversion kit out there yet? |

Good to hear. also, i bought my L92 heads with valves from TSP. will the PTV clear my 6.0 LQ9 setup. i havn't changed anything about pistons/crank in that block. |

water pump options? I have a stock L92, VVT but no AFM. Will any other WP fit this engine like an LS3 vette one? I may need more radiator to engine clearance in the truck I am building and was told that the LS2/3 WP will fit, but I dont see how w/ the cam phaser sticking out so far. Thanks |
someone makes a spacer kit, i dont recall off the top of my head tho, its just two cnc'd blocks that fit between the block and the waterpump that give it enough clearance, might wanna try and just use the l92 pump. |

Pump will work, but you'll have to change your balancer to an LS1 version. |
What is VVT cam phaser or Active Fuel Management? Sorry i am a new member learning about f-bodies. i dont own one but my boyfriend does. its his hobby so i figured i would learn more about it. he has a 1995 camaro z28 and is putting an ls3 in it. So the ls3 doesnt have a VVT cam phaser or AFM... Is it bad that those motors dont? |
