Default Turning a C6 into a unrestricted road race car

We're building the engine for this customer and it's a fun project to watch already. It started with adding a cage and harness and has turned into an all out road race car with Katech LS7, sequential transmission, air jacking system...the works. We are just building the engine, not the car.

It's a fun project to watch. I'll keep updating this thread as more are added on Corvette Forums.

A full cage with NASCAR bars.
A full fire retardant system.

HP numbers will be 600+
3-4 way Moton adjustable shocks. (Bounce/Rebound)
Kooks headers
Cam....more on that later
Brembo GTR brakes
Lexan Glass
Sparco/Recaro race seats
6 point harness
Carbon fiber panels and interior.

Motec with data acquisition

Here we see Mike's engine as it arrived awaiting teardown.

Each engine gets a build cart to keep the many engines here organized. Notice the lifters in the tray soaking in oil. Rings are marked with the cylinder they came out of and are usually reusable if they came from a crate engine with just the hot test.

Somebody added this billet oil cap before it arrived.

Piston-Rod assemblies awaiting rebushing

The small end of the rod will be rebushed with a solid bronze high-modulus rod bushing.

Here we see Mike's bare block. It's awaiting my block machinist who will install deck plates and verify bore sizing. If necessary he will hone to a uniform specification. Not all engine builders do this, however to ensure perfect piston-to-wall clearance we do it every time. We do not make the assumption that the block is perfect from the factory. Occasionally they run a bit on the small side which is fine for a production engine, but we can do better.

We took the connecting rods and pressed out the factory split bushing.

Using a proprietary process, we install the solid bronze high modulus rod bushing in a manner that does not scuff or score either surface. What does high modulus mean in layman's terms? It basically means it can handle compression loads very well.

Next the rod gets sent over to the CNC manufacturing shop at Katech. We machine the contour of the bushing to match the factory rod and then maching an oil groove.

Mike's favorite picture, the CNC mill performing the oil groove operation. For those not familiar with CNC machining, the blue liquid is a coolant that also washes away the chips.

The final rod bushing with contour and oil groove. Sorry it's a little washed out. The bronze bushing is pretty shiny.

Connecting rod set ready to install pistons.

That looks awesome! I like how the sidebars of that cage are low enough where you can get in easily!

Where in the world can you get a sequential transmission that will fit in the C6 and hold that kind of power?

I would love a seq gear box. I loved it on my ditrbikes too, although that is a whole different ball game. I loved the clutchless upshifts.

What is that Z8 doing in the next engine lift bay? I thought Katech was GM only?

Jason,

At PRI I saw a Holinger 6 speed sequantial gear box mated to a stock C6 diff and torque tube. Is that what this car will use?

Stupid question time...
How many miles did that perty little vette have on it?
What is going to happen to the original body (since its getting the composite treatment)?
Will the Composite Body be a C6 Z06 body or an aftermarket Composite widebody kit?

Between the addition of the Roll cage and the composite body what is the Road Race'n Vette going to weight?
The body should drop a couple of pounds but the roll cage is going to add them back...

And the last stupid question... How much total cost (including the price of the car).

I think they will have more sidebars when it's done though.

I don't know where he is getting the gearbox.

As I said in the first post, we are not doing the car..just the engine. The car is not here.

- A few hundred I think
- I don't know what he's doing with it. You can post on the Corvette Forum thread and ask him
- The body will use some Z06 parts and some other surprises I'll leave for later
- About 2800lbs
- You don't want to know
