Default The goat is starting to smoke when I hammer on it.

Well I noticed this for the last few months. When I go wot I noticed a bluish white light smokescreen behind me. Only when I hammer down. Car has 175psi across the boards. She uses about 1 qt. of oil between oil changes. "about 1 qt. every 1500mi". End of tailpipes are not oily at all, either do the plugs. but I do notice oil on the threads of one or two of them. kinda on the outside of the plugs. Car has 109,000 mi. on it. Is there any chance that it could be valveseals or is it prob. the rings? Car runs great, never fouls out the plugs.
It's just kinda embarrasing getting on it, and seeing a smoke screen. What can I do to possible rule out one or the other. Thanks for any help. I will go outside now and fire it up since it has been sitting for about 8 hrs. and see if it puffs out any smoke.

I would go after seal/guides first. Pull the oil cap off and see if you can feel pressure coming out of the fill hole. If yes, the rings are worn.

I'll give that a shot, Im hoping it's the guides/seals. Thanks.

Before you try replacing the more costly things, try "sea foam" or some kind of gas treatment.

I run lucas fuel injector cleaner in it, every other month. I don't think it's a fuel issue, I think it's a oil issue, since the smoke is white/bluish. Car runs smooth, I don't have a injector/fuel problem im pretty sure.

Are you running a catch can to catch any blow by?

My vette is very strong and has never smoked from day one but I still get a couple of tablespoons of oil every couple roadrace sessions. I think this same oil would have contributed to a smokescreen if the catch can was not present.

I also think the seals and guides is a good first step and then an aftermarket catch can.

No I don't have a catch can on her. I think I need to invest in one, that might be my problem. Im going to check to see if there is pressure blowing out of the oil fill hole here in a few minutes, to try to rule out rings.

This is exactly what my C5 was doing, it got worse and worse. It was a oil ring... that is why the compression was good as well.

You talking about a oil ring on the piston? I thought when one was bad it would lower compression, and it would raise if you put alittle oil in the cylinder? I have 175 all across the board.

My car will use oil and it's a fresh 347 with maybe 2500 miles, if I'm beating on it. Yet I don't see any smoke though. Might just be the valve seals though, I'm sure you replaced them when you did the cam, right?

Well, I don't think I did, I don't believe they came with my tsp cam kit, and the car only had 40,000 when I did that. So I believe they are original seals.

Bad valve seals will allow oil to be pulled through them with the TB close. It will smoke when you open the TB back up but go away quickly. If it is smoking for an extended run during acceleration it's rings.

Good luck.

Red face

After thinking about your issue and my response I need to make a clarification.

I did not mean to suggest just do a catch can and move on. For my car, due to the fact it is a stroker and the fact I knew the car would see sustained high rpms I put in a catch can because I knew there would be some blow-by and I wanted to keep tabs on the amount of oil.

I am sorry if I seemed to suggest the catch can as a panacea for what may be at least a valve seal issue but more than likely a ring issue as WLMCD suggested.

Sounds just like my car after the heads were installed, and the car only has 13k miles on it. Gonna have to watch this one.

when I HAMMER mine, it blows out a lot of smoke because of the regular driving around building it up and such. it's fine afterwards, just letting loose the buildup. I'ts been a few days now. Smoking or no?
