ss1500 cam swap to ls7 p0343 problems

Default ss1500 cam swap to ls7 p0343 problems

Ok i have a customer who brought me a awd ss to tune,he did the ls7 cam swap and had a p0343 code,cam postion sensor error,and hard start,he used the factory timing cover and factory timing set from the 6.0 ss....Why is it getting this code and hard start issue?He put a new known good sensor in with same result.I see guys with same problem but with different setups.Do i need the different jumper harness and sensor setup?if so that doesnt make any sense because he is still using the stock timing cover and timing chain.

I read a thread somewhere awhile back on this site that had a cam sensor error prob after cam swap. Turned out the reluctor was ground wrong on the end of the cam. Is it a real LS7 cam? Maybe the plate that holds the cam in could be wrong and the cam is walking? Just throwing stuff out there....

Does the ls7 cam have the reluctor ground on to the cam? if there is no reluctor wheel on the cam the sensor wont have anything to pick up.

You shouldn't be having any issues. If he reused his timing sprocket/chain and front timing cover and it worked fine before there should be no difference other than the cam. Does the tach work when you are able to start the car?

yes tach works fine,but every other start it cranks and pops a bit,then re cranks three to four times and it will finally start,runs perfect afterwards runs hard actually.I thought the same thing as you,the notch is in the cam gear and is in direct relation to the timing cover,so if the old cover and gear were used it should be fine.But it pops 342 343 all the time and has start issues.

is this a gen3 or gen4 motor? where is the camshaft sensor, on the timing cover or on the top behind the intake?

It is a Gen 4 motor.

I would inspect your wiring harness and make sure everything is tight and snug and there are no burned/loose wires. Also, pull the cam sensor from the front timing cover and make sure it isn't damaged and that you can see the cam gear and ensure its the correct piece or its not on backwards (although I don't think you can install it back to front, just a thought).

well according to him its the factory chain,sensor and cover.
Only change was going to a ls7 z06 cam that was it.and it was a factory gm cam from chevy,he tried a new sensor and had same problem.

I'm only reviving this old thread because it is one of the first one's google pulls up and wanted to share my problem to help anyone in the future. I have an 06 Z06 and I had the same code. My first tuner actualy turned it off and tuned around it. Even though the car seemed to run ok, I was down 60-70 rwhp of what we thought it should be based on the cam specs. Drove it that way for 4 months and then put a blower on the car. Now I was down 100+ hp of what we thought it would be comparitively speaking and he said I was running out of fuel. Not accepting this I took it to a different tuner. The tuner asked why the other tuner turned off the "sensor not picking up new cam gear code" and I said I didn't know he did. We starting looking into it and found out my problem the whole time was that my timing gear was off 1 tooth retarded! Don't discount this on the LS7 timing set. It's a 52 tooth wheel instead of the 24 tooth the other LS motors use and apparently very easy to be off one tooth. Hope this saves someone the months of frustration I went through.
