Question 5.3 Gen IV aluminum block

Anyone KNOW how far a 2009 5.3l Gen IV aluminum block can be safely bored? I would like to take it to 4.00".

Boring it out to 3.90" is fine for sure, but I don't know of anyone who has done 4".

Question Sectioned block?

Has anyone sectioned a 5.3l aluminum block and could report on the liner thickness?

My machinist has mic'ed the liner and 3.905" IS the maximum bore. Hope this helps someone in the future.

Default 5.3 aluminum Gen IV truck blocks

I was boring one out for sleeving to 4.125" today and thought I would measure the factory sleeve outside diameter for you.

The outside diameter of the factory cast in sleeve is approximately 4.100". If the sleeves were perfectly on center, you could take it to 3.950" and have .075" wall thickness which is about what a stock LS2 block has. Since it is unlikely the factory sleeves are perfectly placed, to be safe 3.905" would be the max. recommended bore on these.

Steve--thanks for measuring an actual block/sleeve. I will pass this on to my machine shop.

He is taking my block to 3.898" and I'm using standard 5.7L pistons.

I have a 07 LC9 and I was wondering the same thing. I read a few places the gen 4 block had thinner sleeves and could not be bored to 3.905" I'm glad someone has some real measurements to confirm the gen 4 block can make the bore size.
